The Garden City Tomahawks (boys U10) soccer team saved their best game for the season finale on Nov. 14. With a combination of good passing, good defense and good hustle the Tomahawks overpowered the opposition from East Meadow. After a quiet start, where good defense by Dean Gibbons in goal kept East Meadow from scoring, the Tomahawks went on the attack. Erik Stumpf featured in several early attacks and showed great skill in dribbling past the East Meadow defense, and Kyle Walsh kept the pressure mounting.
After a period of sustained pressure, Matt Colantonio got the ball from a throw-in and passed it to R.J. Giamboi who fired into the net for the first Tomahawk goal of the game. Giamboi nearly scored again a few minutes later and continued to apply pressure. A throw-in went to an unmarked Matt Colantonio who tried for the goal. It was stopped by the goalie, but Colantonio got the rebound and made sure with his second attempt for a 2-0 lead. The Tomahawks continued to play aggressively and forced a corner which was taken by Giamboi. He crossed to Alex Buck who side-footed the ball home for goal number 3. A further throw-in was controlled by Patrick Raymond who passed the ball to Jordan Ramsland who shot goal number four past the goalkeeper.
The Tomahawks continued to apply pressure and were narrowly thwarted when Matt Colantonio hit a shot which ricocheted off the cross bar. After a rare attack by East Meadow, Tim Holman, playing his usual great defensive game, passed the ball to Alex Buck who sent it to Drew Tyce whose shot could not be stopped by the goalie, leading to a half-time score of 5-nil. In the second half, the Tomahawks played a bit more defensively and tried to pass the ball whenever possible, but continued to apply offensive pressure. After a weak goal kick by the East Meadow goalie, James Rivoli pounced on the ball, beat two men and shot into the net for goal number six.
The Tomahawks decided to give Tim Holman a rest from his outstanding defense duties and moved him up to a forward position. Chris Agiato won the ball from East Meadow and passed to Holman who scored goal number seven. Towards the end of the game Patrick Raymond threw the ball in to Danny Lisoski who beat one defender and shot for goal number eight. It was a good all-around performance by the Tomahawks, with eight goals scored by eight separate players. The defense was so good that East Meadow managed only two shots on goal, compared to the Tomahawks' 23.
Final score: Tomahawks 8, East Meadow 0. Great way to end the season, Tomahawks!
