Col. Robert E. Wayne (ret.), 72, formerly of Garden City, died on Sept. 21, 1998. He graduated from Hempstead High School and studied at the US Military Academy at West Point where he was a member of the 1945 National Champion Football team and was starting goalie on the hockey team. Mr. Wayne served in the US Air Force for 30 years and was involved in many combat missions in Korea and Vietnam. He received the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Captain Bob was written in 1952 by the Army Athletic Association about his Korean War battles. He retired from the Air Force in 1976 and became a special advisor to Iran where he taught the country's pilots to fly. He later worked for Flight Safety International in Wichita, KS, where he was manager of the flight school. Mr. Wayne is survived by his children, Suzy Horne, Penny Wayne Mills, Polly Wayne and Robert E. Wayne Jr.; and seven grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls, NY. Service at the Most Holy Trinity, West Point. Interment with military honors at the Academy Cemetery, West Point. James C. Murphy, of Garden City and Vero Beach, FL, died recently. Husband of Ruth. Father of Patricia and Richard Owens and James C. III and Margaret Murphy. Grandfather of Cathleen, Patricia, Richard and Christopher Owens and Colleen, Erin, Meghan and Allison Murphy. Great-grandfather of Taylor, Ryan and Casey Pritchard.
