Bring a smile to your preschooler's face as he or she completes his or her own craft project each week during the eight week program, which will be conducted by Sandra Young. This program will be held in Cluett Hall on the former St. Paul's Campus. There will be three 45 minute classes offered each week: Monday at 10:45 a.m.; Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.; and Thursday at 10:45 a.m.

Classes will begin the week of Oct. 19 and registration for these classes will be on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. in Cluett Hall.

The following guidelines have been established for this program:

*There will be a maximum of 15 children per session

*Children must be between 3.5 and 5 years old

*Children must not be in Kindergarten

*Children must be toilet trained

*Children must be able to stay in the room alone

Cost of this program will be $32 per child. Additional sessions will be held in January and April. Registration for these classes will be announced later in the fall. For additional information, call Sandra Young at Cluett Hall at 742-4905.

Sign-ups for the Women's Wednesday night platform tennis league began yesterday, Wed. Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. in the clubhouse at Community Park, so if you did not make it to registration, call Community Park at 483-2525 or the Recreation Department at 742-5800.

There will be two levels of play this season, the B Division -- comprised of intermediate level players (Flights 3 and 4) and the C Division -- comprised of novice and beginner players.

Cost for the season will be $100 per team. Two to four players may be on each team. The fee includes: court time, balls, trophies for division champions, and an end of season party. Instruction will also be included for beginner players.

The fee for the league must be paid when you reigster your team. Admittance to the league is on a first come first served basis.

The Garden City Athletic Association is pleased to announce that they have begun conducting clinics for girls in grades 4 and above. The clinics are held at the Garden City Middle School Field Hockey Field on Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m. The first clinic was held Sept. 20 and was a great success. These clinics will continue until Oct. 25. Linda Norton, assistant Varsity Field Hockey coach at Garden City High School is conducting these clinics. The Garden City Centennial Boys Intramural program is forming a 4th Grade Boys Tournament Team for the fall 1998 through spring 1999 seasons.

Tryouts for this team were held this Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. on St. Paul's Field. Any boy born between Aug. 1, 1988 and Dec. 31, 1988, who is in 4th grade or above is eligible to try out.

A separate team for 5th grade boys will be formed at a later date.

Our indoor season is scheduled to begin with seasonally contracted time on Oct. 8, and our instructional programs will begin the week of Oct. 15.

Once again, we will be offering a full range of programs, from Pee Wee lessons to Senior Citizen lessons. Registration for these programs will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. at the Garden City Swimming Pool Office. Registration will only be accepted in person -- no mail or phone registration will be accepted. Our teaching professionals will be present at registration to answer any questions you may have regarding levels of instruction, experience, background, etc.

In response to requests from our readers, we are now operating three eight week sessions of lessons, which will increase the number of students we can accommodate.

Sessions will be held according to the following dates:

The senior programs are focused on the fundamentals of recreational and competitive play, including tennis fitness, stroke mechanics, positional play movement, and strategies. All strokes are introduced and/or reviewed in the first several sessions, with drills and integration of strokes and strategies built into subsequent lessons.

Students are taught how to practice effectively, and coached play is used to provide ongoing feedback regarding each player's progress. Effort and improvement are stressed.

Cost: $160 per 8 week session

*Adult and Senior Citizen Program

The goal of our Adult Program is to provide a sound basis for recreational play, and to develop the love of tennis as a lifetime sport. Instruction focuses on the fundamentals of movement, groundstrokes, serve, volley, and overhand strokes with concurrent instruction in the princicpals of singles and doubles play. Input from the adult student is encouraged in order to maximize the relevance of the instruction to their individual goals or needs. The objective is to provide a framework of instruction which helps build a clear understanding of functional stroke techniques as well as insights into effective play strategies.

The first 4 week class will begin on Oct. 10 through Nov. 7 and the second 5 week class will begin on Jan. 9 through Feb. 6. There is a minimum of 6 students per class needed to conduct this program. The cost for each week class is $100.

Saturday Night Mixed Doubles Tennis Parties

These parties have become extremely popular over the past several seasons, and we are pleased to continue them for the 1998-99 season. For a fee of just $30 per couple, you'll enjoy court time, tennis balls, refreshments, and snacks. Games are Round Robin "just for fun," and are a great way to enjoy an evening out right here in Garden City.

With the approach of the fall season, many residents are looking forward to the inflation of the indoor bubble at Community Park. In order to get our Women's Leagues off and running as soon as our bubble is up, we have begun accepting registration for these leagues.

League play will begin during the first week of the bubble schedule, on Oct. 8. We offer both singles and doubles leagues, and our staff will take care of the rotation, supply balls, and help secure substitute players, so that all you need to do is play and enjoy!

With the onset of the school year, the five neighborhood playgrounds will be open for use Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until dark. Supervision at these playgrounds will be provided from 3 p.m. to dark Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. until dark on Saturdays and school holidays.

On Sundays, all five playgrounds will be open from noon until 6 p.m. Please note there is no supervision in the playgrounds on Sundays.

Fall marks the beginning of the traditional football season, and the Recreation Department will again offer the popular Flag Football Program in each of the five neighborhood playgrounds. A flier detailing this program was distributed during the first week of school, and children will have the opportunity to register at the playground nearest their home. Games are played in the playgrounds on weekday afternoons after school, and during the day on school holidays.

The Incorporated Village of Garden City and Winthrop University Hospital will once again conduct a flu immunization program for the senior citizens of the Village of Garden City on Tuesday, Oct. 20. This program is part of the countywide immuization program which is co-sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizens Affairs and the Nassau County Medical Center. It is a free, no out-of-pocket expenses program.

This year the Recreation Department, with the assistance of volunteers from the Garden City Senior Women's Club and medical staff from Winthrop Hospital, will be conducting the flu immunization program. It will be held at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane on Tuesday, Oct. 20 between 10:15 a.m,. and 3 p.m. Anyone participating in this flu program should bring their Medicare card. Be ready to write in your identification number (which is the same as your Social Security number) on the applicable forms that will be given to you on the day of your immunization.

Did you know, the flu is a serious disease? It spreads when influenza viruses pass from an infected person to the nose or throat of others. Influenza can cause fever, chills, headaches, cough, sore throat and muscle aches. It can lead to pneumonia and death. The flu can make people of any age ill. Although most people are ill for only a few days, some have a much more serious illness and may need hospitalization. Thousands of people die each year from flu-related illnesses. Most deaths caused by influenza are in elderly people.

Registration has already begun. Residents that are 60 years of age or older interested in receiving a vaccine on Tuesday, Oct. 20, must call Garden City Recreation Department to make an appointment. To make an appointment or for further information, call 742-5800, ext. 275.
