This past Saturday was the 13th anniversary of the first issue of Garden City Life. Now a "teenager," the paper has covered all the news in the Village from the front page stories on the cover of Vol. 1 No. 1 of Aug. 15, 1985 such as, "School Tax Rate is Set at $19.41" and "Proposed Recreational Center Faces Higher Construction Costs; However Interest Rates on Bond Issue Now Lower Than Projected" to today's headlines about the upcoming school bond vote planned for Dec. 10 and the installation of new Village firefighters. This paper has reflected changes within the Village in its headlines and changes in-house here at the paper over the years in the masthead on this editorial page.

The first editor of our paper, as most of our readers remember, was Eileen Murphy, who while retired from the newspaper business, has continued to grace our pages with occasional articles, and most recently articles involving her role as a community leader and activist. Now the president of the EPOA, she is making news, rather than reporting it. I have had the distinct pleasure of discussing the paper with her and have always appreciated her input. I had the good fortune to become the editor, with my first issue of April 3, 1997.

Our page designer, a.k.a. layout person, is Barbara Holubar, who has the amazing talent of making a page come to life. For the last few weeks, our readers may have noticed that Pat Eagleson's name has been appearing as the page designer. Barbara suffered a sports related injury, and Pat has graciously added working on our paper to the quite impressive list of work she does here at Anton Community Newspapers. Barbara will be returning shortly, and we all wish her a speedy recovery and miss her around the office. Of course, we thank Pat for contributing her time and great talent.

I have personally enjoyed covering the stories that touch the lives of the residents of the Village and having the opportunity to enjoy so many wonderful events and activities in the Village. Getting to know the people who make up this truly unique community has been a great pleasure and I look forward to continuing to get out there in the Village with pen and camera ready to capture all of our readers' accomplishments. Also, thanks to the groups, committees, and individuals that have and continue to contribute calendar items, press releases and announcements for publication and we invite all to feel free to contribute.

Here's looking forward to many more years of Garden City Life!

Amy Edel
