The outstanding sounds of The Sound of Music Orchestra will be heard at the Twilight Romance Dance Night on Friday, July 24 at 7 p.m. Come on down and dance the night away (or just tap your toes) as the Big Band Era lives again at the Garden City Pool. Admission to Big Band Night is free for all pool members and normal guest fees apply.
Every Tuesday night, the Garden City Pool presents a family film, which is shown in the picnic area of the pool beginning at 8:30 p.m. Admission to the movie is $1 for all pool members and $2 for all guests of members. Please note that only Garden City residents who are Garden City Pool members are permitted to attend movies unless brought as a guest of a member.
For your convenience, the Snack Bar and Good Humor Stand will remain open during the movie and popcorn will be on sale in the Picnic area for $1 a cup.
Children under 13 must be accompanied to and during the movie by an adult.
Please note: in order to set up for the movie, the picnic area will close at 7 p.m. on movie nights. Additionally, anyone causing a disturbance during the movie will be removed from the pool.
The Garden City Public Library in cooperation with the Garden City Pool, is once again sponsoring the Teens and Tots Storytime Program this summer. This program will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. in the Pool's picnic area.
The Garden City Swim Team opened their season with a win for Division 1 over the Rath Park Swim Team and a loss for Division 4 to the Christopher Morley Park Swim Team. The Division 1 team recently hosted the Long Beach team and Division 4 traveled to Newbridge Park. We will bring you the results of these meets next week.
Saturday, July 25 the Division 1 team will host the Levittown Swim Association, while Division 4 will visit the Parkwood Pool in Great Neck. Pool #2 will remain closed until the conclusion of the Swim Meet.
Another outstanding free concert will be held at the Gazebo on Village Green on Thursday, July 23 as the Recreation Department presents Sonny Geraci and The Outsiders. Sonny and The Outsiders are one of the '60s most popular groups, and their number one smash hit Time Won't Let Me was a highlight of 1966. After scoring several more top 40 hits with The Outsiders, Sonny became the lead singer of Climax, and had yet another top ten hit with Precious and Few . Sonny is one of only a handful of artists to have had top ten singles with two different groups. The Outsiders will perform these hits and many other popular oldies during their show which begins at 7:15 at the Gazebo. For weather related updates call 742-5888.
On Tuesday, July 29, the five neighborhood playgrounds will be visiting the fascinating world of undersea creatures at the New York Aquarium. Located directly on the ocean, adjacent to world famous Coney Island, the Aquarium has one of the largest and most diverse collections of sea life on the east coast.
Buses will depart from the five playgrounds at 9 a.m. and will return to the playgrounds at approximately 4 p.m. Supervision for this trip will be provided by the Playground and Recreation staffs. The cost of this trip is $7 and registration is now underway at the playgrounds. Register with the Playground Director at the park nearest your home. Registration is limited to the first 100 kids to register.
On Friday, July 24 a trip to Adventureland Amusement Park in Farmingdale will be conducted for youngsters from Grove Playground. This trip will return there at approximately 4 p.m. While at Adventureland, youngsters will enjoy three hours of unlimited rides, including the roller coaster, buccaneer, bumper boats, and other favorites from noon to 3 p.m.
Cost of this trip will be $12, which includes transportation to and from Adventureland, unlimited rides while at the park, and supervision during the bus ride and trip by the Playground and Recreation Department staff. This trip must be paid for in cash only, no checks please.
Registration for this trip is now underway at Tullamore Park. Interested youngsters must register and pay for this trip no later than 10 a.m. on July 24. No refunds will be issued after that time. Due to limited space, the trip will be limited to the first 50 youngsters to register. For further information, please contact Playground Director Russ Dworsak or Rob Weber at Grove Playground.
All Village residents of high school age are invited to drop in to the St. Paul's Field House on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for an Open Basketball Program. All games are strictly "pick-up" and are competitively oriented. This program will continue until August 26.
