As Trustee Jenkins reported in his capacity as the liaison to the Garden City Fire Department at the last Board of Turstees meeting on July 16, the firefighters of the Garden City Fire Department spent the night on Monday, July 13 trying to save the Garden City Country Cub on Stewart Avenue from the ravages of a blazing fire. The roof of the buidling had to be removed, and the building suffered extensive water and smoke damage, particularly in the kitchen, but Trustee Jenkins commented that he believes the club will have the facility up and running in about 60 to 90 days. Two firefighters were injured, both suffering from smoke inhalation and one with a laceration on his face, but both are reportedly all right now.

Jenkins commended the Garden City Fire Department on their rapid response, saying that they were there in a matter of minutes and stayed to battle the blaze until 5 a.m. The call had come in shortly after midnight on July 23, and when the units arrived, firefighters determined that there was a fire in a dumpster located just outside the kitchen, and the fire had spread into the kitchen itself. Fire Chief Brian Ridgway had the alarm retransmitted as what the Department has termed a "Signal 10" or "Working Fire" and other departments were called in.

Assistant Chief Richard Chiarello was in charge of the efforts on the external portion of the fire, while Truck Company Captain Victor Tzannes and Engine Company Lieutenant Ed Moran led the efforts underway with the roof. Assistant Chiefs John Nesbitt and Larry Nedelka both coordinated hose line and ventilation operations within the building for the firefighters combating the fire inside the kitchen.

Franklin Square sent a truck and an engine, Mineola sent people to help man the phones at Garden City's Headquarters, and Stewart Manor sent an ambulance.

Fire Chief Ridgway commented, "We had a good amount of fire inside the building, but the members did an excellent job putting it out fast and keeping the fire damage down." Trustee Jenkins also expressed appreication to the combined efforts of the neighboring communities for assisting Garden City with this emergency situation and their history of such support.

This fire is currently under investigation.
