Anthony Pontolillo Sr., 69, of Garden City, died on May 26, 1998. Born in Hempstead, he graduated from Hempstead High School. He joined the Coast Guard in 1945 and served aboard the icebreaker East Wind. He was a police officer in Garden City from 1950 to 1973 and retired as the city's most decorated officer. His son Anthony works for the department and wears his father's badge number.
Mr. Pontolillo also worked as a car salesman, truck driver, a real estate agent (Graham Properties) and with the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Jones Beach teaching safe boating classes, coordinating boating patrols and serving as the auxiliary's public affairs officer.
He is survived by his wife, Fran; his children, Anthony Pontolillo Jr. and Diane Pontolillo Losecar; his brother, Peter Pontolillo of Rome, Italy; his sister, Elizabeth Betty; and two grandsons. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard. Mr. Pontolillo was cremated and a Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph's RC Church.
Howard L. Pedersen, formerly of Garden City, died on June 5, 1998. He was past commodore of the Freeport Yacht Club. Husband of Ruth E. Father of Nancy and Scudder Black. Grandfather of Sandra. Great-grandfather of Taylor. Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, Rockville Centre.
Louise P. Howe, 74, of Garden City, died on Juen 26, 1998. Born in New Bedford, MA, she was a member of the Garden City League for Helen Keller Services for the Blind, the Garden City Community Club and a volunteer at Nassau Hospital (Winthrop University) for 55 years. She received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Wife of the late Wallis E. (Pete). Mother of Denison Sharfman, Elizabeth Shannon and the late Wallis E. Howe III. Sister of Elizabeth Booth. Grandmother of four. Great-grandmother of two. Arrangements were made by Fairchild Sons Funeral Home. Service at the Cathedral of the Incarnation with Rev. Robert Wilkshire officiating. Interment Greenfield Cemetery.
