Another outstanding free concert will be held at the Gazebo on Village Green on Thursday, July 2, as the Recreation Department presents the fabulous Great South Dixieland Band. This outstanding group of entertainers, under the direction of Mike Carubia, will perform a program of "Dixie" flavored swing tunes.
Mike Carubia is one of Long Island's most prominent musicians and the band has become a mainstay of the local concert scene, delighting audiences with their great music for many years, and we are pleased to welcome them back to the Gazebo.
Concerts at the Gazebo begin at 7:15 p.m., and there is no charge for admission. The Gazebo is located at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues, adjacent to Village Hall. Bring your lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy the great sounds under the beautiful summer sky. In the event of rain, concerts are held indoors at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. Due to space limitations at Cluett, proof of Garden City residency is required for all concerts moved indoors.
For up to the minute information regarding concert location and weather conditions, please call the Program Line at 742-5888.
With the end of the school year, the five neighborhood playgrounds are again ready to provide you and your children with a summer full of fun activities and events.
For your enjoyment, these five playgrounds (Edgemere, Grove, Hemlock, Nassau Haven, and Tullamore), are open and staffed seven days per week during the summer. Each playground has basketball and tennis courts, ball fields, play areas, bathrooms, and a public phone.
The Playground Directors at each park develop their own program of daily activities and events throughout the summer, and special events are scheduled by the Recreation Department at each park. For a more detailed listing of activities and events, please consult the summer edition of Leisure Times, which was mailed to all residents in early June.
The first special event scheduled for this summer is our annual playground Junior Olympics, a fun-filled track and field event, which will be held at the Stewart Athletic Field on Thursday, July 2.
Interested children should contact the Park Director at the playground nearest their homes for information on how to participate. Transportation to the Olympics will be provided by the Recreation Department Bus.
On Saturday, July 4, the Pool will again host Family Fun Day for our members. Family Swim Races, the famous Pool "Greased Watermelon Contest" and a concert featuring Squeaky Clean will highlight the day. The first session of swim lessons began June 30, and continue until July 10. Please note that swim lessons will be held on Friday, July 3.
The Tuesday night movies at the Pool have returned. Movies are shown at 8:30 p.m. and admission is $1 for members and $2 for guests. Garden City residents who are not Pool members can only come as a guest of a member, otherwise they will not be admitted. The Snack Bar and Good Humor Stand remain open during the movie and popcorn is on sale.
Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and the Pool closes at 7 p.m. on movie nights to set-up.

The Recreation Department is again sponsoring the Recreation Leadership Training Program as part of the annual Recreation Activities Camp, which will be held on the grounds of St. Paul's from Aug. 17 to 21.
This training program will offer residents an opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience, while providing a chance to demonstrate abilities to the Recreation Department. There will be both a morning and an afternoon session, so there will be an opportunity for all high school student athletes to participate. Those participating in the training program will be doing so on a volunteer basis.
