Once again this summer, the Recreation Department is pleased to offer a Pre-School Arts and Crafts Program at our Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. This program will be held under the direction of Christine Trenkle, who has been an arts and crafts instructor at Tullamore Park for many years. Children will be treated to many different projects, in a lighthearted and fun atmosphere, complete with music and stories to go along with their craft projects. This program is open to children 3 and 1/2 to 5 years of age. A birth certificate must be presented at the first class for each child registered.

This program will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, in two week sessions, from July 6 to July 17, July 20 to July 31, and August 3 to August 14. Cost of the two week program will be $50 per child, payable at the time of registration, which is under way now at the Recreation Office. Call the Recreation Office at 742-5800 for further information.

Please note: Some of the registration fliers which were distributed to the schools indicated an incorrect time for this program. The program will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. as indicated above. We apologize for any inconveniences this error may have caused.

The Garden City Athletic Association is pleased to announce that the initial registration for Fall Thunder Football will be held on Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Paul's Cluett Hall. This registration is being held during the Soccer Fest weekend so as to make registering for this program convenient for our residents. Additional registrations will be scheduled, and will be announced in the local newspapers.

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce that their popular Adult Tennis Lessons, under the direction of Dick Scott and Jay Gallagher, will once again be offered at the Community Park Courts. These lessons will be held beginning the week of June 15, according to the schedule below. Registration for these lessons has begun in the Recreation Office in Village Hall.

Mondays:

*Women's Coached While Playing... 5:30-7 p.m.; $100 per person

*Men's Coached While Playing... 7-8:30 p.m.; $100 per person

Tuesdays:

*Senior Citizens Lessons... 8:30-9:30 a.m.; $75 per person

Wednesdays:

*Adult Beginner/Advanced Beginner... 6-7 p.m.; $75 per person

These classes will run for eight weeks and registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis in the Revreation Office in Village Hall.

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce that we are offering a special "Stay and Play" Pre-School age program at our Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. This program will be under the direction of Pat Leonenko, a Certified Early Childhood Teacher. Children will participate in activities such as craft work, music, science, math, and story-time. Children will be encouraged to work together to meet new challenges, enjoy old favorites, and experience creative play. This program is open to children from 3 and 1/2 to 5 years of age, and a birth certificate must be presented at the first class for each child registered.

This program will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in two one-week sessions, from August 17 to 21, and August 24 to 28. Cost of the one-week program will be $75 per child, payable at the time of registration, which is under way now at the Recreation Office. The Recreation Department has begun accepting Roster Packages for the upcoming Women's Summer Softball League and the Men's Summer Softball League. These are two different leagues, but the following conditions apply to both:

Rosters will be accepted from teams meeting the following eligibility requirements:

1. Teams comprised of current residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City.

2. Teams comprised of players who resided in the Incorporated Village of Garden City during their high school years.

3. Teams comprised of employees of the Incorporated Village of Garden City.

The fee for this league will be $350, which includes games, balls, umpires, and end of season trophies for winning teams. Applications will not be accepted without a completed roster package, which includes: roster (name, address, and phone number for each player), a check for the full league fee, and a copy of a current, valid driver's license for each player.

Roster packages are now available in the Recreation Office. The acceptance will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and the deadline for submitting completed packages will be 4 p.m. on Friday, June 12. The league will be formatted to begin play during the week of June 22. For more information, call 742-5800.

Membership Applications for the 1998 Season at the Garden City Pool have been mailed to all Village residents. The Pool will open for its 42nd season at noon on Saturday, June 13. Anyone who has not yet received their application package may call the Recreation Office at 742-5800 for a duplicate application, which will be mailed to your home, or can be picked up in person at the Recreation Office.

Completed pool cards will not be mailed back to you, but will be sent directly to the pool photo and lamination center, where they may be picked up by an adult member of the family.

Please pay particular attention to the "head of household" statement on your pool application.

The Recreation Department has a limited number of discount tickets to the Nickelodeon Rug Rats Live Performance at the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. Regularly priced $30 tickets are priced at $27 for this show and are on sale now in the Recreation Office in the Village Hall. Tickets must be paid for in cash only, no checks please. Last day of sale for these tickets will be Friday, May 29.

Once again, the Recreation Department is pleased to offer our residents several exciting and fun-filled Youth Sports Camps. These camps are held at the Community Park complex, and at the St. Paul's Campus.

This year, camps will be held in baseball, basketball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, soccer and tennis. Details of each camp appear below, and additional information may be obtained by calling the Recreation Department at 742-5800.

The Youth Baseball Camp will be held at Community Park during the weeks of July 20 to 24 and July 27 to 31. This camp will be under the direction of Bob Defliese, coach with the Garden City Schools. This instructional program is offered for boys and girls ages 6 to 13 in two-hour sessions, and youngsters may attend for either one or two weeks. Sessions are held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for youngsters 6 to 8 years old, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. for youngsters 9 to 13 years old. The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster for one week (five two-hour sessions), and $100 per youngster for two weeks (10 two-hour sessions), which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion. There will be a limit of 50 children per session.

The Youth Basketball Camp will be held at the St. Paul's Field House during the weeks of June 29 to July 9. This camp will be under the direction of Tom Clayton, former basketball coach at the US Merchant Marine Academy. The purpose of this camp, is to provide instruction in self-improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation and most importantly, fun!

The Basketball Camp will be offered in two sessions. The first, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. will be for boys and girls entering grades 3 and 4 in September 1998. The second, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be for boys and girls entering grades 5 and 6 in September 1998. There will be a limit of 40 children per session.

The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster per week, which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Girls Lacrosse Camp will be held at the St. Paul's athletic fields during the week of July 20 to 24. This camp will be under the direction of Ginny Monsees-Kramer, former coach at the Garden City Schools. This program will cover the basic techniques of catching, throwing, scooping and will then move into drills and the rules of the game.

The camp will be offered in two sessions. The first, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. will be for girls entering grades 3 and 4 in September 1998. The second, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., will be for girls entering grades 5 and 6 in September 1998. There will be a limit of 30 girls per session.

The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster, which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Youth Soccer Camp will be held at the Community Park during the weeks of Aug. 3 - 7, and Aug. 10 - 14. This camp will be under the direction of Paul LeSueur of the Recreation staff, and former member of the New York Cosmos professional soccer team. The camp staff will be comprised of both present and former successful collegiate players. This camp will provide expert instruction on individual skill development. Youngsters in each age category will be further divided into appropriate skill levels with the instructor/camper ratio not exceeding 1 to 10. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed.

The camp will be offered in both two-hour and five-hour sessions, and youngsters may attend for either one or two weeks. Youngsters must be entering first grade in September 1998 in order to participate in the camp, and proof of age may be required.

The two-hour sessions will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and will cost $50 per youngster for five days, and $100 for 10 days.

The five-hour sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will include a one-hour lunch and swim break, supervised by camp staff. The five-hour session will cost $100 for one week, and $200 for two weeks. Cost of the camp also includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Youth Tennis Camp will be held at Community Park courts during the weeks of June 29 to July 2, July 6 - 9, July 13 - 16, July 20 - 23, Aug. 3 - 6, Aug. 10 - 13, Aug. 16 - 20 and Aug. 24 - 27. This camp will be under the direction of Laszlo Jurak, Community Park head pro and Jo Appollonio, assistant head pro.

This camp will be offered for youngsters ages 6 to 12, in both two-hour and five-hour sessions. Youngsters will be grouped by ability within their age groups.

The two-hour sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or from 2 to 4 p.m. The two-hour session will stress basic strokes and techniques. The two-hour sessions will cost $50 for four days. The five-hour sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The five-hour session will focus on extra skill work, with additional play and game strategy session in the afternoon. The five-hour session also includes a lunch and swim break supervised by the camp staff. The five-hour sessions will cost $100 for four days. There will be a limit of 24 youngsters per two-hour session. Cost of the camp includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.
