On Friday, Feb. 27 there will be a 6th Grade Recreation Night for all 6th grade students in the Village. The Recreation Night will take place in the St. Paul's Field House from 7 to 9 p.m. Activities will include ping-pong, knock-hockey, table golf, etc. Music will be provided by a D.J. Admission will be $4 payable at the door. Parents please note: To avoid problems with youngsters roaming around outside rather than entering the building, we ask parents to wait until they see their children enter the building before driving away. Those inside will not be permitted to leave until 9 p.m. when the event is over. Additionally, no one will be permitted to enter after 7:30 p.m. unless accompanied by a parent. The Garden City Athletic Association is pleased to announce some important upcoming dates:
- Saturday, March 14 -- Major League Tryouts at the St. Paul's Field House from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for 11-year-olds and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 12-year-olds
- Saturday, March 21 --Mandatory Baseball and Softball Coaches Clinic on the dynamics of baseball and softball to be conducted by Bob Fontaine from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the St. Paul's Field House. Also, an Upmires Clinic will be conducted by Bob Fontaine from 11 a.m. to noon at the St. Paul's Field House.
- Saturday, March 28 --Baseball and Softball Players Clinic at the St. Paul's Field House will be conducted by Lou Santos and the Diamond Pro's staff from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for 5 to 9-year-old players and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 10-year-olds and older.
- Saturday, April 6 --Little League Parade at 9 a.m.
For an evening of tennis fun, come down on Saturday, March 14 or March 28 from 7:30 until 10 p.m. for the Recreation Department's Mixed Doubles Tennis Party. The cost of this evening of tennis is $30 per couple which includes court time, balls, refreshments, and round robin play. There is a limit of 10 couples for each tennis party. The Recreation Department has a limited number of discount tickets to the Discover Stars on Ice show at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, March 13, at 8 p.m. Regularly priced $30 tickets are discounted to $26 for this show. Tickets are on sale now in the Recreation Office in the Village Hall, and must be paid for in cash only, no checks please! The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a supervised trip to the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, March 21, for the 11 a.m. performance. These regularly priced $19.50 tickets are discounted to $17, which includes bus transportation to and from the show. The Recreation Department bus will leave the Village Hall parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and return there immediately following the show. Supervision will be provided by members of the Recreation Department staff. Tickets are also on sale for the Thursday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. performance. These regularly priced $19 tickets are discounted to $16.50 for this show. There is no bus transportation for the Thursday evening performance. The Recreation Department has announced that the final day for pool interviews will be Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Reminder: even if you were employed by the Recreation Department last year, you are still required to re-apply and be interviewed for the coming summer. No interviews will be conducted without an appointment and no positions will be offered to applicants who do not interview. To schedule an interview, please call the recreation office at 742-5800.
The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club has announced that the Spring 1998 Intramural Soccer Season will open on Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5, with Soccer Fest scheduled for the weekend of June 6 and 7. Programs are available for all girls in grades Pre-K (those children who will be entering kindergarten in September 1988) through grade 8, and for boys in grades Pre-K through grade 6. No try-outs are held, any child that comes out to play will be placed on a team and guaranteed playing time of at least one half of each game. Registration forms are now being accepted through the mail. Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Office in the Village Hall, at Cluett Hall and at the Garden City Soccer Shop on Seventh Street. Formal registrations will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. The final registration date for the spring season is Saturday, March 7. The next Open Gym Nights will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on the following dates: March 6, 13, 20.
On Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. the St. Paul's Field House is designated as Open Gym Time for children and their families. Recreation staff members are on hand to help move the activities along.This time is designated for our residents to participate and use the Field House on a family and individual basis. Organized group practices and workout are given scheduled time at other times during the week.
