When our School Board was planning the role of the Citizens Advisory Committee, they stated that such a board would hold open meetings.

At the last Feb. 9 meeting, they reneged on that promise. They also stated that they would consider having a construction attorney on this committee. While the committee is a good one, it lacks legal expertise. The lack of such expertise was part of the downfall of the bond issue. The committee is top-heavy in financial experts. This probably occurred because all seven factors in the Village had to have one representative each.

As usual, we are more concerned with form rather than substance.

If the Citizens Advisory Committee had open meetings, it could draw on the expertise of other citizens who would attend.

Hillary Clinton's advisory board held its meetings in secret in an effort to foist on the American people a health plan that unravelled as soon as its findings and recommendations were made public.

The School Board should permit the Citizens Advisory Committee to hold its meetings in public in the spirit of the open meetings law. Prepared statements to be made at School Board meetings are not an adequate substitute, especially since the Board will not permit them to be questioned directly.

Is the School Board paving the way for another bond defeat? Ineptness is the forerunner of potential disaster. Open the Citizens Advisory Committee's meetings! Some construction attorneys and others might be helpful. What can we lose?
