At its breakfast program to be held at Sears on Feb. 25 at 7:45 a.m., the Garden City Chamber of Commerce will welcome as guest speaker, Dr. Gary Wadler, Chairman of the Nassau County Sports Commission. Dr. Wadler has not only been instrumental in the outstanding work of the Commission in promoting sporting events here in Nassau County, but is also the recipient of the prestigious International Olympic Committee Samaranch Prize. Dr. Wadler will speak about the importance of the World Sport Science Congress to be hosted by Adelphi University, as well as the series of Goodwill Games which commence the following week.
Professors Ronald Feingold and Gary Barette of Adelphi's department of health studies, physical education, and human performance science, are co-directors of the Congress. Drs. Feingold and Barette, who will also be at the breakfast program, report that the event will be attended by more than 300 distinguished educators and sportsmen from 50 different countries.
They both agreed, "We not only wish to conduct an exciting conference prior to the Goodwill Games, but are sincerely excited about the opportunity to involve the Garden City community in the many social and hospitality events we are planning." (The Chamber Board and members of the business community are currently working in concert with these efforts.)
It is estimated that some 20,000 visitors will be drawn to the area over a 3-week period. Residents and business people are cordially invited to come and hear how this double-header on our doorstep will impact Garden City.
Carmen Armstrong, program chairman, has announced that a wonderful raffle prize -a mini day of beauty- has been graciously donated by Anastasia Beauty Salon. Debbie Belica of Once Upon a Dish, Franklin Avenue's paint-your-own-pottery store, has won the 60-second commercial. Additionally, Bob Schoelle, Village Administrator will offer an update on current Village activities.
The coffee bar opens at 7:45 a.m. with full breakfast served at 8 a.m. The program will be over at 9 a.m. Reservations at $15 each may be phoned in with payment at the door, or a check made payable to the Garden City Chamber of Commerce may be mailed to the Chamber at 230 Seventh Street by Monday, Feb. 23.
