The Garden City High School Fencing Team apologizes for the delay in the appearance of their article on their successful season and will be sharing the news with the Garden City community A.S.A.P. The Recreation Department has a limited number of discount tickets to the Discover Stars on Ice show at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, March 13, at 8 p.m. Regularly priced $30 tickets are discounted to $26 for this show. Tickets are on sale now in the Recreation Office in the Village Hall, and must be paid for in cash only, no checks please! For further information or to reserve tickets, please call the Recreation Office at 742-5800. The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a supervised trip to the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, March 21, for the 11 a.m. performance. These regularly priced $19.50 tickets are discounted to $17, which includes bus transportation to and from the show. The Recreation Department bus will leave the Village Hall parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and return there immediately following the show. Supervision will be provided by members of the Recreation Department staff. Tickets are also on sale for the Thursday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. performance. These regularly priced $19 tickets are discounted to $16.50 for this show. There is no bus transportation for the Thursday evening performance. The Recreation Department has announced that the final day for pool interviews will be Saturday, Feb. 28. Challenging, enjoyable positions are available at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make the commitment to a team that works hard to provide quality programs for our residents, then we'd like to talk to you! We offer competitive salaries, friendly working conditions, opportunity for advancement and the chance to be part of a special team. If you are a high school senior or older, and are ready to make a commitment for a great summer job, stop in at the Recreation Office in the Village Hall, pick up an application and schedule an appointment for an interview. Reminder: even if you were employed by the Recreation Department last year, you are still required to re-apply and be interviewed for the coming summer. Pool interviews only will be conducted for the final time on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No interviews will be conducted without an appointment and no positions will be offered to applicants who do not interview. To schedule an interview, please call the recreation office at 742-5800. The Recreation Department has returned the weekend matinee! The Recreation Department has scheduled some of the best in family oriented films for you to enjoy. The next film scheduled is Oliver and Company. This film will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 22, beginning at 2 p.m. Oliver and Company, Walt Disney's 27th venture into imaginative animation, is a contemporary version of Charles Dickens' classic tale of Oliver Twist. Filled with splendid music and dazzling animation, Disney's magical tale features the voices of Billy Joel, Dom Deluise and Bette Midler in a story to delight audiences of all ages. There is no charge for admission, and advance reservations are not required. For your convenience popcorn and soda will be available for you to purchase. This film is rated G and running time is approximately 72 minutes. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 742-5800. Please note: all recreation programs normally held in the Garden City School Facilities will resume on Monday, Feb. 23. The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club has announced that the spring 1998 Intramural Soccer Season will open on Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5, with Soccer Fest scheduled for the weekend of June 6 and 7. Programs are available for all girls in grades Pre-K (those children who will be entering kindergarten in September 1988) through grade 8, and for boys in grades Pre-K through grade 6. No try-outs are held, any child that comes out to play will be placed on a team and guaranteed playing time of at least one half of each game. Registration forms are now being accepted through the mail. Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Office in the Village Hall, at Cluett Hall and at the Garden City Soccer Shop on Seventh Street. Formal registrations will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. The final registration date for the spring season is Saturday, March 7. On the following Friday nights, we'll open up the St. Paul's Field House for our middle and high school age students as a Recreation Center setting. These unstructured, but supervised evenings will have basketball and volleyball available, and as space permits, a selection of table games, and nominally priced refreshments. A sound system will be provided and students are encouraged to bring their favorite tapes to enjoy. These Open Gym Nights will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 20; March 6, 13, 20. On Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. the St. Paul's Field House will be designated as Open Gym Time for children and their families. This open time provides the opportunity for you to enjoy various gym activities with your children, in open and unstructured activities. Basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, along with popular table games, will be available for your use, and recreation staff members will be on hand to help move the activities along. Please note: This time is designated for our residents to participate and use the Field House on a family and individual basis. Organized group practices and workout are given scheduled time at other times during the week, and we respectfully ask that you abide by the operational guidelines for this Open Time.
