Obituaries

John Kirkman Gurney

John Kirkman Gurney, 87, of Ponte Vedra, FL formerly of Garden City, died on Dec. 7, 1997. He was born in Brooklyn where his family made Kirkman Soap. He graduated from Choate School and Princeton University where he was a member of the wrestling team.

Mr. Gurney worked at the Bank of New York and with the Rubber Commission. He was a Navy lieutenant on a landing craft in the invasion of Okinawa during WWII. He became a partner at Estabrook & Co., NYC, an investment firm. He was director of the Greenwood Cemetery and the Greenpoint Financial Corp. He was a member of the Garden City Golf Club and the Cherry Valley Country Club.

Mr. Gurney is survived by his wife Jane (Peterkin); his children Susan Buckey, Thomas Peterkin Gurney and Timothy Kirkman Gurney; his sisters Esther Cruikshank and Ethel Betz; three grandchildren; and his brother-in-law John Peterkin. Services were held at Christ Episcopal Church. Donations can be made, in John Gurney's memory, to Hospice Northeast, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32240 or Christ Episcopal Church Foundation, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.


Floyd W. Lockwood

Floyd W. Lockwood, of Garden City, died on Dec. 19, 1997. Husband of the late Rita. Father of Gilbert F. and Richard C. Grandfather of three. Great-grandfather of one. Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Chapel, Garden City. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.


Veronica C. Kaiser

Veronica C. Kaiser, of Savannah, GA formerly of Garden City, died recently. Wife of Howard A. Mother of Maggie Carr and Mary Kaiser. Grandmother of Oliver B. Carr IV. Sister of Rosemary Ahern. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Peter the Apostle RC Church, Savannah, GA or the DuVall Home for Retarded Children, DeLand, FL.
