Police Report

Truck Stop

  • 12/12/97 the DOT and the GCPD stopped 17 trucks at Frank and Cedar; 101 tickets were written; 5 were taken out of service; 2 were overweight.
  • 12/11/97 the DOT and GCPD stopped 22 trucks at the Stewart RR; 64 tickets were written; 4 trucks were taken out of service; one was overweight.

Criminal Trespassing

12/14/97 at 5:30 a.m., a 20-year-old male was found at a location on Brooke Street. He was in possession of 7 stolen cell phones worth $700 and a stolen bike worth $200.

Shoplifting, Larceny, and Petit Larceny

  • 12/13/97 at 3 p.m. a juvenile male was arrested at Sears for attempting to shoplift a $50 speller/organizer.
  • 12/12/97 at 6 p.m. there was a larceny of a $200 jacket from PayHalf.
  • 12/14/97 at 7 p.m. petit larceny was committed at the Garden City Hotel when a wallet worth $80 was stolen from a shop.
  • 12/13/97 at Lord & Taylor, a 38-year-old female was arrested for petit larceny when she attempted to steal $316 worth of clothing.
  • 12/11/97 at 3 p.m. at Lord & Taylor, a female complainant reported that 1 necklace and 1 pair of earrings were stolen from her shopping bag after she purchased them in the store. The jewelry was valued at $970.
  • 12/18/97 at 7:40 a car parked near Lord & Taylor was entered after the passenger side door handle was broken and $400 worth of holiday gifts were stolen.
  • 12/17/97 a stereo valued at $600, a VCR valued at $400, and stereo speakers worth $800 were stolen from the storage bin of an apartment building on Hilton Avenue.
  • 12/20/97 two subjects were arrested at Lord & Taylor for attempting to shoplift $543 worth of assorted merchandise. The first subject was a 35-year-old male and the second was a 33-year-old female. The couple had their 19-month-old child with them at the time and were released on bail.
  • 12/22/97 an arrest was made at Sears for petit larceny. An 18-year-old male had attempted to steal 2 wallets worth $23 and $12 worth of men's underwear.
  • 12/22/97 a 31-year-old woman was arrested for petit larceny when she was caught attempting to steal $668 worth of assorted clothing from Lord & Taylor.
  • 12/24/97 petit larceny was committed when an unlocked automobile parked in the owner's driveway on Barnes Lane was entered and a $50 cell phone was taken
  • 12/24/97 petit larceny was committed when a car in lot 7N was forcibly entered and an AM/FM CD/Cassette player worth $200 was stolen and $150 worth of damage was done to the side rear door handle on the driver's side.
  • 12/26/97 two more lawn reindeer (we reported five previous thefts in the 1/1/98 issue) were stolen from a lawn on Garden Street. They were worth a combined value of $250.
  • 12/26/97 a $150 cell phone and a $35 power cord were stolen from an unlocked vehicle in lot 7E.
  • 12/27/97 two subjects were arrested at Lord & Taylor for stealing $636 worth of assorted merchandise. One subject was a 24-year-old female and the other was a 27-year-old male.
  • 1/3/98-1/4/98 four sweaters worth $560 were stolen from a car on Clinton Ave.
  • 1/2/98-1/3/98 a $50 cellular phone was stolen from a home on Hilton Ave.
  • 1/2/98 a cellular phone worth $100 was stolen from a car in the Sears parking garage.

Grand Larceny

  • 12/8/97 at 12 p.m. two gold necklaces worth $5,225 were stolen from a home on Chester Avenue (there were "workmen" at the home at the time).
  • Between 11/1/97 and 12/7/97 $2,400 worth of golf clubs (6 total) were stolen from the storage room of the Cherry Valley Country Club on Rockaway Avenue.
  • 12/9/97 at 10:15 a.m. an employee reports that her clear plastic handbag was stolen from under the counter she worked at in the ladies' department of Sears. There were assorted credit cards, papers, a debit card, and $100 in cash in the bag.
  • 12/9/97 at 1 p.m. a pocketbook which had been placed under a child's stroller in the underseat carry rack, was stolen while the 31-year-old female victim was shopping at Lord & Taylor. There was $140 worth of cash and assorted credit cards in the bag.
  • 12/16/97 at 11:45 a.m. a wallet was reported stolen from the Adelphi University gymnasium. There was $100 in cash and assorted credit cards.
  • 12/22/97 at 1:30 p.m. a 62-year-old woman was arrested at Lord & Taylor for attempting to steal $1,049 worth of assorted merchandise.

Assault

  • 12/13/97 at 6:30 p.m. an assault was reported by an employee of a hair salon in the Garden City Hotel. The complainant was a 50-year-old female who reports that her 61-year-old male employer punched her in the arm, injuring her shoulder. The man was charged with assault in the third degree.
  • 12/14/97 at 1:40 a.m. a 21-year-old woman reports that she was assaulted in the ladies room of Dallinger's at the Garden City Hotel by two female friends. She suffered a laceration to her nose.
  • 12/18/97 a 43-year-old male was arrested for assault in the third degree after assaulting his wife.

Forgery

  • 1/2/98 a 29-year-old woman was arrested at Sears for signing a credit card slip for merchandise totalling $1,410.

Possession of Forged Instruments

  • 12/13/97 at 4:15 p.m. at Lord & Taylor, two males were arrested for possession of forged credit cards with which they were attempting to purchase $794 worth of merchandise. One was 27-years-old and the second was 30-years-old.

Aggravated Unlicensed Operation

  • 12/12/97 at 8:30 p.m. a 28-year-old male was arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree. He was initially stopped for driving with no headlights.
  • 12/9/97 a 20-year-old male was arrested after having been stopped initially for tinted windows and a defective headlight.
  • 12/22/97 at 9:35 a 36-year-old male was arrested after having been stopped for speeding. He had 24 suspensions on 8 dates.
  • 12/28/97 a 30-year-old male was stopped for making an improper right turn and it was discovered that he had 9 suspensions on 5 dates.
  • 1/5/98 a 40-year-old man was arrested by Officer Edwards. He had 6 suspensions on 5 dates.
  • 1/4/98 a 29-year-old man was arrested by Officer Oswald.
  • 1/3/98 a 31-year-old man was arrested. There was a bench warrant for his arrest; he had illegally switched his license plates; he was uninsured and his car was not inspected; and he had a number of other violations.

Attempted Burglary

  • 12/12/97 at 9 a.m. the owner of a home on Meadow Street discovered a cut screen and a window pushed ajar, but no apparent entry was gained.

Burglary

  • 12/7/97 between 1 and 2:30 p.m. a cell phone worth $150, a video cam corder worth $650, and assorted jewelry at an as of yet undetermined value were taken from a home on Beech Street.

DWI

  • 12/10/97 at 9:15 p.m. a 43-year-old male was arrested after he was stopped for repeatedly crossing the white lines while driving west on Stewart Ave. He was determined to be DWI and had a .17 VAC.
  • 12/12/97 at 1:25 a.m. a 43-year-old female was stopped for speeding at 52mph in a 30mph zone. She was determined to be impaired with a VAC of .08.
  • 12/20/97 at 2:50 a.m. a female subject, age 40, was arrested.
  • 12/20/97 at 3 a.m. a 47-year-old male was arrested.
  • 12/18/97 a 56-year-old male was arrested.
  • 12/18/97 at 2:55 p.m. a 40-year-old male was arrested.
  • 12/21/97 a 41-year-old female was arrested.
  • 12/28/97 a 30-year-old male was arrested after having been stopped for speeding.
  • 12/31/97 a 43-year-old man was arrested after his involvement in an automobile accident. He was arrested for DWI and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana).

The Suit Incident

  • 12/9/97 at 1:10 p.m. officers were called to 71 Clinton Road outside the Worthington Capital office where an altercation was taking place. Four males all had a scheduled appointment at the office there and were all associates. A 28-year-old male was arrested for assaulting a 29-year-old male during this argument. The fight was apparently related to a quarrel between the other two men over the ownership of three suits. A 27-year-old male was then also arrested for the grand larceny of three suits valued at $1,800 from a 23-year-old male.

Menacing with a Deadly Weapon

  • 12/22/97 at 1:09 a.m. a 45-year-old male was arrested for pointing a revolver at another gentleman with whom he had engaged himself in a "road rage" (ie. a traffic dispute). The arrested party had a carry permit for the City of New York, however the permit will most likely be taken as a result of this violation. The arrested party reportedly commented while wielding the revolver, "How tough are you now?" to the other man.

Building Evacuation

  • 12/22/97 at 10:50 a.m. vapors from roofing work being done at 100 Garden City Plaza seeped into the vents and caused employees of the office to experience various degrees of illness. The building was evacuated, but no violations were cited. Twelve people complained of complications and six of the twelve were taken to the hospital, while the rest were treated at the scene.

Criminal Mischief

  • 12/29/97 a report was filed stating that between 12/26-12/29 $450 worth of damage was done to a change-making machine in the basement of 520 Franklin Avenue.
  • 12/28/97 the rear window of a vehicle parked in the driveway of the owner's home on Cambridge Ave. was broken with a brick at approximately 10 p.m., causing $150 worth of damage.
  • 12/27/97 two outdoor spotlights were knocked off their bases at a home on Yale Street causing $200 worth of damage.
  • 12/31/97-1/1/98 a $50 door-frame and a $5 phone lock were broken at the GCRR Station's taxi stand.
  • 1/5/98-1/6/98 three roller hockey rink pads worth $600 were damaged at Community Park.

Assault and Robbery

  • 1/1/98 a 22-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a 30-year-old man at the Garden City Hotel and then stealing his $20,000 gold watch.
