Obituaries

Richard M. Dicke

Richard M. Dicke, 81, of Garden City, died on Nov. 20, 1997. Born in Boise, ID, he graduated from Princeton University, earning a varsity letter in football and was captain of the boxing team. He earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the editor of the Law Review and graduated first in his class. He served in the Navy during WWII commanding a PT boat. He earned a commendation for leadership, courage and devotion to duty.

Mr. Dicke worked at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett specializing in securities and utilities law and becoming a senior partner. He served on the board of directors of the American Electric Power Co. and Atlantic City Electric and the board of trustees at the University of Pennsylvania. He was vice president of the Garden City School Board in the 1960s and was also a Boy Scout leader. He was a benefactor of Adelphi University, Winthrop-University Hospital and the National Center for Disabilities.

Mr. Dicke was predeceased by the wife Elizabeth (Cantlin) and his son Richard Jr. He is survived by his children Deborah Long of Garden City, Cindy Dicke, Mary Robinson and David Dicke; his sister Harriet Hartline; and six grandchildren. Services were held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.


John J. Majeska

John J. Majeska, 91, of Garden City South, died on Nov. 30, 1997. Husband of the late Helen. Father of Helen Nachenberg and John K. Majeska. Fatehr-in-law of Amelia and Sam. Grandfather of Tommy, April, Brian, Allison and Scott. Great-grandfather of Nicole. Memorial service at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Donations can be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 54 Nassau Blvd., West Hempstead, NY 11552.
