Seniors Ciara McFeely and Theresa Robitaille have been honored with National Merit Special Scholarships. Ciara's scholarship was awarded by Mutual of New York. Theresa's scholarship was sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation.
Special Scholarships are offered through the National Merit Scholarship program by corporate and business sponsors. They are a supplement to Merit Scholarship awards.
Eligible students are usually the children of employees or residents of communities where the company is located. They entered the 1998 competition by taking the qualifying test, the 1996 PSAT/NMSQT, and by filing an entry form with the sponsor company. The sponsor forwarded its entry forms to NMSC which identified applicants who meet merit program participation requirements and have the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores. Using the qualifying test as an initial screen or entry form, NMSC designated a pool of candidates who then had an opportunity to continue in the competition for the sponsor's Special Schoarships. Each of these candidates and officials of their high schools completed and submitted an NMSC scholarship application that contained a substantial amount of academic and other information that was used in the selection process.
Congratulations to Ciara McFeely and Theresa Robitaille on their prestigious awards.
