Summer Concert: Risky Business

Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks is happy to announce the schedule of its concert series “Summer Music on the Village Green.” The concert series will be held at the gazebo on the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues. Concerts are held on Thursdays beginning at 7:15 p.m. Concerts are held rain or shine. In the event of less than perfect weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall, 295 Stewart Ave.

Cupcake Wars

Lee Perrotta will return to the Garden City Public Library to host Cupcake Wars from 7–8:15 p.m. “Warriors” on two teams will create desserts using fillings, frostings and secret ingredients. Voting will determine the winners. Registration began online on Eventkeeper on Monday, June 16 for Cupcake Wars. This program is limited to 24 YAs. Marvelous Movie Matinee

A screening of the 2001 film David Mamet film Heist starring Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Trip To Atlantic City To See Summer Lovin’,

A Bobby Darin And Connie Francis Tribute

Attendees will travel by coach bus to Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino on Twith arrival time of 11 a.m. Participants will receive $20 in slot play. Lunch is on your own. There will be plenty of time to gamble or enjoy the sun and then attendees will see the show. After the event, around 5 p.m., the group will head home. The cost of this trip will be $40, checks only made payable to Rendezvous Travel. Please note, once the fees are sent to the venues, they are not refundable so make your selections carefully. All trips are open to senior residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City only. This is a non-sectarian, no-profit organization of widows and widowers 50 plus years of age. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month and are held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church located on Franklin Avenue and Fifth Street in Garden City. Learn more about animals at the fun family show, Frogs, Bugs, and Animals with Jason from Green Meadows Farm. This exciting live animal show will be held on at 7 p.m. and is for children ages 2 ½ through grade 5 and their families. Tickets are required. Ticket distribution began Saturday, June 28 at 9:30 a.m. in the Children’s Room. Each individual needs his or her own ticket to attend. Please arrive promptly. News

The Garden City Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for the 35th annual Fall Festival Street Fair set for Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Seventh Street. The chamber thanks the Garden City Hotel which will serve as the primary event sponsor.

JGS entertainment will return for the 16th year as master ceremonies providing music and vocals. There will be plenty of activities for the kids. Included will be the return of the two trackless trains carrying children 12 years of age and younger up and down Seventh Street sponsored by Coach Realtors and Garden City Teachers Association. There will be the traditional inflatable bouncy house sponsored by SMPL Technologies and the ever-popular money cube sponsored by Calogero’s and Leo’s. The Garden City Parks and Recreation Department will have giveaways and temporary tattoos.

Reminder

With the fall sports season upon us, the department of recreation and parks would like to remind all residents that pets are not allowed in any neighborhood parks, Community Park, or St. Paul’s fields. Non compliance with this rule will result in the issuance of appearance tickets.

Register For The Online Registration Option

Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks will offer the option of online registration with credit card payment beginning with its winter programs in early December.

In order for a family to use the online registration option, the family will first need to visit the recreation and parks office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to verify residency and their family information and receive their password.  A list of instructions as to how to use the website will be included.

Stretching tips for the high school athlete

Prior to the start of high school running season, Garden City’s Physical Therapy Options (PTO) had an opportunity to provide a presentation to members of Sacred Heart Academy’s cross country team. Team members gathered at Garden City’s New York Running Company to learn strategies and tips for a successful fall season.

PTO staff members Dr. Meghan Goetz, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and PTO Aide Mike Murphy discussed the importance of stretching to prevent injury and provided strategies and tips for success for the high school runner.
