St. Anne’s 4th graders

sweep OLV

basketball tourney

While most kids have fun during Christmas break, some St. Anne’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) 4th graders managed to have fun and put a trophy under the tree at the same time.

The St. Anne’s 4th grade boys CYO basketball team went undefeated to claim the championship in the Our Lady of Victory Christmas Basketball Tournament, held in Floral Park. The OLV tournament, which ran from Dec. 21-Dec. 29, featured some of the better CYO teams from across the region. Following wins over Notre Dame and Corpus Christi, the St. Anne’s boys captured the title with a victory over St. Rose in the championship game. Throughout the tournament, the boys displayed an unselfish attitude, some hard-nosed defense, and a relentless desire to win.

Playoff appearance has program on right track

The Sewanhaka Indians snapped its playoff drought this season, making it to the postseason for the first time since 2010, but were bounced in the first round.

The Indians, led by head coach George Kasimatis, finished the regular season with a 4-4 record, after finishing each of the previous two seasons 2-6. That was good enough for the seventh seed in the Nassau County Conference III. The Indians went on the road to play the Lawrence High School Golden Tornadoes and lost 42-12.

Sewanhaka Indians senior and wide receiver Jacques Francois  has one goal every time he steps out on the football field; to get better each week.

“I always try to better myself. Each game I look to get better,” said Francois . “I don’t pinpoint a key moment [individual performance] cause I always want to do better.”

Francois  came into the season as the most accoladed player on the Indians, winning an All-Conference award last year.

Senior Prevails In QB Competition

Written by Michael Florio, Floralpark@antonnews.com Friday, 11 October 2013 00:00

SHS football coach says both are primed for greatness

The quarterback competition for the Sewanhaka Indians was tight all summer, but experience trumped youth.

Jake Mellen won the job for the Sewanhaka High School’s varsity football team. Mellen, a senior, was battling sophomore Elijah Tracy.

“Jake had a better summer and performed better in the scrimmages,” said Indians head coach George Kasimatis. “He has a better grasp of the offense and he has a leadership role. Being a leader, he has more invested.”

Kasimatis does not want to take anything away from Tracy either.

The first-year varsity signal-caller is primed for the role in the next few seasons.
