Tourney To Benefit School

Written by Tricia Ganun, Friday, 14 February 2014 09:55

On Saturday, March 15, the Third Annual Tom Hayden Our Lady of Victory (OLV) 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will take place at the school’s gymnasium. The event is hosted by the OLV School Board and is open to ages 13 and older.

This year’s honorees are George Rettinger and Joe Power, in memoriam. Rettinger was CYO president and a long-time coach. Power, who passed away several years ago, spent many years coaching in the program, often at Rettinger’s side. The funds raised will enhance OLV’s technology program.

Bodden Believes And So Should You

Written by Michael Florio, Friday, 14 February 2014 09:47

The Sewanhaka Indians boys basketball team does not only count on Carlos Bodden to lead them in scoring, but also to lead them on and off the court.

This is evident as Bodden, the teams starting small forward, is only a junior but is already a team captains.

“He really is a role model for us on the court, specifically with how hard he plays,” said Indians head coach Jason Allen. “He sets a great example around school, he’s a great kid.”

Bodden ranks 14th in Nassau County, averaging 18.1 points-per-game. Both Bodden and Allen still see ways he can improve, which should only scare teams in the Indians conference even more.

sweep OLV

basketball tourney

While most kids have fun during Christmas break, some St. Anne’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) 4th graders managed to have fun and put a trophy under the tree at the same time.

The St. Anne’s 4th grade boys CYO basketball team went undefeated to claim the championship in the Our Lady of Victory Christmas Basketball Tournament, held in Floral Park. The OLV tournament, which ran from Dec. 21-Dec. 29, featured some of the better CYO teams from across the region. Following wins over Notre Dame and Corpus Christi, the St. Anne’s boys captured the title with a victory over St. Rose in the championship game. Throughout the tournament, the boys displayed an unselfish attitude, some hard-nosed defense, and a relentless desire to win.
