The events of September 11, 2001 were an attack on the fundamental freedoms of our country. Countless lives were affected by the cowardly actions of terrorists and it is an event that we, as a nation, will never forget. Time and time again, our country has grown stronger from the trials and adversity it has faced. The will of the American people never ceases to inspire me and it is with that in mind that I was proud to introduce and have President Obama sign into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.
Along with landmark investments made to enhance effective programs such as AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, the bill creates new service opportunities for Americans of all walks of life. I, along with my colleague, Peter King, included language in the Serve America Act that urges all to observe September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Civic engagement reveals an individual selflessness that speaks to the larger American spirit and I can think of no better way to honor the innocent victims and brave men and women who came to their rescue than with this day. September 11, 2001 changed our nation on both a political and individual level; and on a day that cost thousands of innocent lives, this day of service will challenge present and future generations to not only lend their expertise and experience to our nation but also give our nation an opportunity to remember and honor those who perished. It is my hope that each of you takes advantage of the opportunities in the Serve America Act and pauses to reflect on that tragic day.
We can all do more to serve our communities and our nation. To pay tribute to all of those who gave of themselves in one of our nation’s darkest moments, I encourage all Americans to find a way to give back on September 11, 2001 this year and every year.
