Football youngsters ages 7 to 14 got the experience of a lifetime on Nov. 17 at Hofstra University…personalized instruction from New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. The kids were beaming with excitement. Not one child was turned away; smiles all around. I’m surprised more events like this haven’t occurred at the school, which has a state-of-the-art practice bubble, where the event took place.
The event was capped off with a dinner and Q&A. I remember covering the Jets in 2008 and what a thrill it was to cover an NFL team. Watching the children get giddy over their favorite player was all the more worth working on a Saturday.

The daytime and evening groups, of Made With Love, made up of more than 20 knitters, have been meeting for more than four years at the Floral Park Library to make items for local community members and organizations in need. The group has recently donated to Wounded Warriors, INN of Hempstead, local nursing homes, Liz’s Day, Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, Birthright, Lutheran Family Services and St. Joseph’s of Seattle. The group has donated knitted hats and scarves to the preemies, cancer, and heart patients at Winthrop Hospital and St. Baldrick’s.

The Floral Park Recreation Summer 2014 programs have now reached their half way point. While youngsters still have four more weeks of camps and activities, the night time volleyball and basketball programs are now gearing up for their final push to the playoff and championship rounds. Of the 55 adult teams competing, only Madness and Chaos (B league basketball) and Poppy’s (Women’s competitive volleyball) have managed to move through the season without a blemish on their records. Playoffs for volleyball are on Aug. 6 and Aug. 7, while basketball quarterfinals begin Thursday, July 31. Family, friends and spectators are always welcome. Good luck to all teams and players during their quest to become Floral Park’s Champions of the Summer of 2014.
