Floral Park: Tree City USA

Floral Park has recently been named as a 2013 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to urban forest management.

Floral Park achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.“We're very proud; it is a designation that we certainly covet and work hard to maintain,” said Floral Park Village Mayor Tom Tweedy. "This year is unique; we've planted about 125 trees this year already and have more trees in the ground now than before Superstorm Sandy."

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters.

“Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities, like Floral Park, make smart investments in urban forests,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”

Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities.

Tammany Hall is an essential part of the vocabulary of New York City politics. For many, Tammany Hall and political corruption are synonymous. For others, Tammany Hall was a lifesaver tossed into the turbulent and unforgiving sea of 19th- and early 20th-century New York City. The author of a new book about Tammany Hall, Terry Golway, will speak about these complexities at the Wednesday, Nov. 12 meeting of the Irish Cultural Society of the Garden City area.

Golway’s book Machine Made: Tammany Hall and the Creation of Modern American Politics has been well received in book reviews. His talk will acknowledge the misgovernment of Tammany Hall with its creation of “Boss” Tweed as the very face of political corruption. But he will also argue that Tammany Hall was an influence on the progressive legislation which helped working people, the Irish among them, to form a vibrant middle class in the United States.

On Oct. 23, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced the arrest of a Floral Park woman for stealing nearly $700,000 from a longtime employer, as well as more than $10,000 from a new employer, by writing herself checks drawn from company bank accounts.

Deborah Tangredi was arrested and arraigned on Oct. 23 before Nassau District Court Judge Joy Watson on the following charges:
