Changes Afoot On Sewanhaka Central High School BOE

SCHS attorney Doug Libby resigns and retires; Alice Bowman appointed assistant principal

The Sewanhaka Central High School Board of Education both gained a new assistant principal and lost a board member during its meeting on Tuesday night, August 28. Alice Bowman was appointed to assistant principal at Floral Park Memorial High School (FPMHS), and attorney Doug Libby announced his resignation and retirement. Bowman’s position went into effect on September 1 to begin the school year, and Libby’s resignation will take effect on September 30.

“I have always worked to be a part of this community, Floral Park Memorial High School is the best,” said Bowman following the meeting.  She began teaching at the high school back in 1999 in the English Department, became the chair in 2006 and will now be replacing Stan Johnson who is retiring this year.

“There is [no way to measure] how valuable Stan has been to the district, he is Floral Park Memorial High School,” said Sewanhaka CHS Superintendent of Schools Ralph Ferrie. Congratulating Bowman, Ferrie expressed his confidence in her appointment, saying: “She has some shoes to fill, and I am sure she will do very well.”

Bowman has been recognized for her work with awards such as the Phi Delta Kappa “2012 Friends of Education” award. On June 15 at a dinner ceremony, Bowman was one of many who received the award given to those who demonstrate and excel in leadership, research and service in daily life Writing in the Knight Line newsletter, New Hyde Park Memorial High School Principal Kathleen Sottile wrote about Bowman: “(Alice Bowman) has exhibited outstanding ability as leader of the English department for the past six years. She maintains high expectations for both teachers and students, and has guided faculty members in their professional growth.”

Following Bowman’s appointment, the board announced the resignation and retirement of attorney Douglas Libby. “It saddens us all,” said Superintendent Ferrie about Libby’s departure. “From the time that I came to the district, Mr. Libby has been extremely supportive, and an invaluable resource on our administration.” Libby has served the district for 32 years, and public service for 38 years. 

“It’s very hard for me to leave. Since the day I was appointed here, I have always sincerely considered it a privilege to serve the public,” said Libby at the meeting. Board President Jean Fichtl added following Libby’s comments: “It has always been a pleasure to work with you.” Superintendent Ferrie said that the board will have a transition period for Mr. Libby’s position.
