Legislator Richard Nicolello and members of the Republican minority in the Legislature have introduced a resolution that would require the county's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to create a tuition assistance plan for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. The measure authorizes and directs OEM to identify and seek grants from the federal and state government as well as other sources. To the extent, such grant funding is obtained; OEM is to offer a scholarship program for eligible volunteers at Nassau Community College. The proposed legislation is intended to assist local volunteer fire departments and ambulance companies in their efforts to recruit new members to fulfill their important public safety mission.
