Opinion

On Valentines Day, I took part in a very important press conference with members of the Assembly that are impacted by the third track held in Mineola. I joined with Assemblyman Tom McKevitt and Assemblyman Rob Walker in creating a special Assembly Advisory Task Force on the Third Track. We felt the need to create this committee in response to the MTA-LIRR's "top secret" plan that was submitted to the federal government and kept under lock and key away from local officials.

This event was held with only our appointees to this task force. We will immediately begin hearings with the greater community. Assemblymembers McKevitt, Walker and I will not sit idly by while the LIRR prepares plans that can have a devastating impact on Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Westbury and Mineola.

On a personal note, I was very pleased to appoint the vice chairman of this committee. My choice for this prestigious post was Floral Park resident and businessman Timothy Dalton. Tim's commitment to this effort is well known and very respected. I am so proud that Tim has accepted this post and am confident- true to Floral Park traditions- he will do an exemplary job. Thank you Tim for your service.

During our news conference, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt appointed the chairman of the group and tapped Mayor Jack Martins of Mineola. Assemblyman Rob Walker appointed Westbury resident William Wise. Finally, the committee was rounded out by New Hyde Park Mayor Dan Petruccio an appointee of both Assemblyman McKevitt and myself.

The members of this Advisory committee come from very unique backgrounds and will be able to use their strengths to help put a blueprint together to fight the third track plan. Unlike most panels made up of full time elected officials, this panel was purposely devised to include an educator, businessman, community civic activist and an attorney.

This balance was crucial in getting diversified opinions and input. It's a balance the State Assembly delegation is proud of.

I am very proud that Floral Park will have such a strong voice on this Advisory committee in Tim Dalton. Working with CARE led by Floral Park Mayor [Phil] Guarnieri, our Advisory Task Force will focus community effort in fighting the LIRR's devastating and secretive plan.

Our first hearing is going to be held in New Hyde Park. Next, Floral Park will be heard from and finally Mineola-Westbury. Again, my personal thanks goes to Floral Park's Tim Dalton for again making a difference for our community.

Assemblyman Tom Alfano
