The Wednesday Mothers' Club (WMC) will be holding its annual spring dance Saturday, March 1, at the Stewart Manor Country Club from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. This year the dance will benefit the family of Maria Iraggi, a lifelong resident of Floral Park who was a pedestrian hit by a car Dec. 22, 2007 as she was crossing Jericho Turnpike.
Nassau County detectives reported that Iraggi, 37, was crossing Jericho Turnpike approximately 63 feet east of Emerson Avenue when she was struck by a 2007 Jeep Liberty traveling westbound. The vehicle, according to police, failed to stop after the collision.
On the same day of the accident, at approximately 11:25 a.m., the operator of the Jeep, a fellow Floral Park resident, surrendered to the Homicide Squad, police said, and was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a serious accident.
Maria suffered life-threatening injuries and has undergone numerous surgeries since the accident, including right knee surgery, thoracic spine fusion and two intramuscular roddings for leg fractures. Doctors have said that she will be required to live in a rehabilitation facility for 6-12 months to learn to function again and will most likely need some sort of rehabilitation for the rest of her life.
Maria, a single mom of 7-year-old son, Shay, a second-grader at John Lewis Childs School, needs the help of residents.
