The following are trustee reports from the Sept. 4 Floral Park village board meeting.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that the sidewalks and curbs on Calla, Geranium and Verbena Avenues have been inspected and marked for repair. If weather permits, the next streets to be inspected will be Violet, Iris and Rose Avenue and Clarence and Zinnia Streets.
The Department of Public Works has currently prepared the fall tree-planting list. Anyone who had a tree removed from in front of their property this past year will automatically be put in the new tree-planting list and will be notified in writing with further details. If any other resident would like a tree planted in front of their home, call the Department of Public Works at 326-6320. Every effort will be made to fulfill your request.
The roof at village hall has been replaced and the scaffolding is coming down. Further, the Floral Park Public Library interior lighting improvements in the children's section have been completed with the adult side currently being started.
Trustee James Rhatigan reported that the pool season officially ended on Labor Day evening, completing another safe and enjoyable summer for members and guests. The pool staff hosted the traditional senior citizens picnic Sept. 4 with a good number of people in attendance. With the end of the pool season, it is appropriate to thank staff members who did so much to provide a "wonderful environment" to residents. Pool Director Tom Dillon oversaw a great group of lifeguards, office staff and maintenance personnel who took care of every need of pool members. While the pool will go into hibernation for the winter, our Recreation/Pool Building will continue to provide activities and meeting space to a number of our community groups through the fall and winter months. The Pool Committee will soon be meeting to critique this summer's activities and develop action plans for next year. Pool members wishing to provide input to the committee are asked to direct their correspondence to the village, preferably through the village email address, comments@fpvillage.org.
Trustee Rhatigan reported that the Floral Park Fire Department recently participated in the Labor Day Parade sponsored by the Hicksville Fire Department and will be marching in the next First Battalion Parade to be hosted by New Hyde Park. Seeing the department decked out in dress uniforms, along with its shining apparatus, gave Trustee Rhatigan a sense of pride for the department, who also compliments its dedication and professionalism in serving the community day in and day out.
Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki reported that she accepted a personal invitation to meet with Dave Siewart, the air traffic manager of the JFK Air Traffic Control Tower. The meeting provided clarification and insight on several issues that affect the volume of air traffic over the village. First, residents will be interested to learn that Runway 22L is currently under construction and will most likely be throughout October. Based on the information provided by Mr. Siewart, construction is limited to weekdays between the hours of 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., which provides some much-needed reprieve for residents under the flight path of 22L, Trustee Tomecki said.
Second, in recent weeks, Trustee Tomecki has received questions about runway rotation at JFK. In the past, as many residents are aware, JFK Tower, in an agreement with TRACON (air traffic controller), has sought to rotate runway usage every eight hours in an effort to mitigate noise over communities like Floral Park.
Nevertheless, given the increase in the volume of air traffic, JFK has not been able to rotate its runways every eight hours since January of this year, Trustee Tomecki explained. Finally, Mr. Siewart, who worked on the Airspace Redesign Plan, informed Trustee Tomecki that if the plan is implemented, it would provide additional departure routes out of JFK and would not have an impact on arrivals. "Therefore, it seems unlikely that Floral Park will be adversely affected by the redesign plan. This, of course, is good news for our residents," she added.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Trustee Rhatigan and carried unanimously, Mayor Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 8:05 p.m.
