The following are trustee reports from the July 24 Floral Park village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene reported that during June, the department issued 11 building permits, 15 plumbing permits, 10 electrical permits, 13 fence permits and 42 miscellaneous permits. The Architectural Review Board met July 25 to discuss three cases. The Zoning Board of Appeals will not be meeting this month.
The department is currently conducting annual pool inspections. A number of residents have not yet filed for an annual pool inspection. In light of recent pool tragedies that have occurred, the building department urges residents to apply for their pool renewal permits. A third and final notice will go out. Failure to file for a pool renewal permit will result in a summons.
Deputy Mayor Greene thanked the fire department, police department and Department of Public Works for helping residents during the torrential rainfall that occurred July 18.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that the asphalt overlay on Emerson Avenue, between Bryant Avenue, 85th Avenue and South Tyson Avenue, and along the railroad from Tulip Avenue to South Tyson Avenue will be completed this week. New traffic signal detection loops will be installed immediately after the completion of the asphalt work and then the roads will be striped.
Repairs to sidewalks and curbs in the West End that were inspected and marked for repair will be completed in the next two weeks. The next area to be approved for inspection by the village board will be from Calla Avenue to Plainfield Avenue, between Tulip Avenue and Belmont Race Track.
The Department of Public Works meter and maintenance departments have just completed renumbering all village parking meters with ID tags. The new system will identify meters by a white label with black writing on the front of the meter where the coins are inserted. The identification will start with letters identifying the street the meter is on followed by an inventory number. "Hopefully, this new identification system will make it easier for people to report problems with meters, and quicken the response time for inspection and repair," Trustee Tweedy said.
Trustee Tweedy also thanked the Department of Public Works, fire department and police department for all their hard work helping residents during the rainstorm July 18.
Trustee James Rhatigan reported that during June the department responded to 21 fire calls and 92 calls for medical assistance for a total of 109 responses.
On Sunday, July 22, the department hosted the fourth Annual Keith Fairben Invitational Drill. At this event, members of various departments exhibited their firematic skills through a series of "old fashioned" competitive events. "The department prided itself not only by hosting this wonderful event in honor of its fallen comrade but also by posting a second place finish overall in the tournament," Trustee Rhatigan said.
He added, "The chiefs and members of our fire department are to be commended for their assistance responding to the effects of the severe rainstorm July 18. Once again they demonstrated their value to our community and willingness to come to the assistance of their neighbors."
The Recreation Center is bustling with activity. Member subscriptions to the pool have surpassed last year's complete membership totals. "Pool membership remains a wonderful value for residents seeking relief from the summer's heat," Trustee Rhatigan said. "Our swim team, the Pirates, began their season with a win over the Stewart Manor swimmers, and swim lessons are fully into their second session."
At the Recreation Center, activities continue throughout the day and evening. The Bobby Regan Softball Tournament is now underway and the Artie Hunt Baseball Tournament began. The Little League program posted District 29 championship teams in girls age 11-12 softball, girls junior softball and boys junior baseball. Congratulations to all of the excellent players who represent Floral Park so well and to the coaches and managers who so willingly give of their time to instruct them.
Trustee Rhatigan urged residents to come to the Recreation Center Thursday, Aug. 16, at 7:30 p.m. for the awards ceremonies for the youth and adult programs.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki and carried unanimously, Mayor Phil Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 10 p.m.
