The following are trustee reports from the Tuesday, April 3 Floral Park village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene reported that during March the department responded to 97 calls.
Deputy Mayor Greene congratulated Police Lieutenant Michael Suppe and Police Sergeant Thomas McCarthy on their promotions within the department.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that the department has begun to put away its snow equipment and started spring cleanup throughout the village. Crews have been out sweeping the hundreds of tons of sand from the streets and repairing damage caused by sand and plows. Although this winter was considered mild in relation to the amount of storms that occurred, the two ice storms in February made the winter seem so much more severe, he said.
On March 23, KeySpan applied for a road opening permit with the department to replace a gas main that was leaking and corroded on Carnation Avenue between Floral Boulevard and Crocus Avenue. This work would have entailed trenching the roadway for 370 feet. Carnation Avenue was resurfaced four years ago and is still a protected street under the village code so KeySpan was called to see if there were any alternative way to do this work, and to make sure that the roadway would be restored to its original state.
After meeting with KeySpan it was determined that they could replace the gas main by doing most of the diggings in the tree lawn area between the sidewalk and the curb and by using trench-less technology to lay most of the new lain. The new plan still requires a few cuts in the roadway but this is a much better alternative to the original plan to trench the entire length of the street, Trustee Tweedy said.
This year's sidewalk repair program will consist of the remainder of the West End section of the village from Chestnut Avenue to Larch Avenue. Residents within this year's program will soon be getting a notice outlining options if their sidewalk or curb is in need of repair.
Trustee James Rhatigan offered his congratulations to the mayor and deputy mayor in their re-election to office and welcomed Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki to the board. Trustee Rhatigan said he is eager to work with his fellow board members in order to maintain the high standards that residents have come to expect of village services.
"With the reorganization meeting of the village comes a changing of the guard, so to speak, and the reassignment by the mayor of boards and committees to specific trustees," he said. While Trustee Rhatigan is extremely excited to be offered the opportunity to serve as fire commissioner, he does note with some regret that he must also pass to Trustee Tomecki the duties of library commissioner and liaison to the Citizens With Disabilities Committee. Trustee Rhatigan has enjoyed working with both the library board and members of the committee and hopes that his schedule will allow him to continue to interact with them.
Trustee Rhatigan said that while the recreation center continues to mourn the loss of its beloved member, Jim Krug, it also recognizes that work must continue and to this end Recreation Director Kurt Meyfohrt has announced that Tom Dillon will assume additional duties within the department. "Tom has ably served as our pool director and he will continue in this capacity," he said. "We know that Tom will continue the fine legacy of service that has been left him."
Further, the recreation center began their spring and summer hours April 15. The facility will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sept. 30. As a reminder, please note that a Village of Floral Park leisure pass is required for use of all facilities as well as registration and participation in all activities and events offered by the center.
Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki thanked the mayor, Deputy Mayor Greene, Trustee Tweedy and Trustee Rhatigan for welcoming her so warmly to the Floral Park board. Trustee Tomecki would also like to extend a word of thanks to the staff at village hall with whom she had the opportunity to meet with and said their support and words of welcome are most appreciated.
While Trustee Tomecki does not have much to report, she wanted to inform residents that in the last 24 hours since her installment she has met with the village administrator at which time she was briefed on the management and operations of the daily working of the Village of Floral Park's government. As the newly appointed liaison to the Floral Park Library, she has also reached out to Library Director Carolyn Voegler in the hopes of setting up a meeting with her. Regretfully, Carolyn was out of town but Trustee Tomecki hopes to meet with her. In addition, Trustee Tomecki has scheduled meetings with all key department heads, including Department of Public Works, Building Department and the Recreation Center and touring all of their facilities.
Trustee Tomecki also had the opportunity to meet with the executive board of the Hillcrest Civic Association where she had the opportunity to speak with several of the leaders from that area.
Trustee Tomecki also said she will be attending the FAA Noise Mitigation Meeting, scheduled for Monday, April 23, at the New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott Hotel. The meeting will begin at 6 and end at 10 p.m. All residents are encouraged to attend, Trustee Tomecki said, as it will be an opportunity for them to learn more about and weigh in on the Airspace Redesign Plan. For more information, visit www.faa.gov.
Further, she said she would like to encourage all residents to reach out to her with their questions and concerns and that she is looking forward to living up to and exceeding their expectations by continuing the proud tradition of good government, which has helped make Floral Park "a great place to live and raise a family for almost a century."
Mayor Phil Guarnieri welcomed newly elected Trustee Tomecki to the board and said he looks forward to working with her and the board in continuing to serve all residents and business owners in the community.
On motion by Deputy Mayor Greene, seconded by Trustee Rhatigan and carried unanimously, Mayor Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 8:30 p.m.
