The Floral Park-Bellerose Board of Education accepted the resignation of longtime trustee Archie T. Cheng at a special meeting conducted on March 28. Cheng has served with distinction on the Floral Park-Bellerose School District Board since 1989. Cheng also represented district residents on the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education since 1991and served as president of both the Floral Park-Bellerose and Sewanhaka boards.

On May 15, the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School District Budget and the election of two full-term trustees will be submitted for voter approval (as a result of the expirations of the terms of office of board members Robert L. Burke and Patrick E. Salmon). Burke and Salmon have indicated that they are running for re-election.

As a result of Cheng's resignation, the remainder of Cheng's term of office through June 30, 2009 will also be filled. Therefore, three trustee seats will be submitted for voter approval. Candidates for membership on the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School District Board of Education must be nominated by petition. Signatures for this year's nominating petitions should total approximately 65 qualified voters. Each signer's address must be indicated on the petition.

All petitions must include the name and address of the candidate and must identify the seat that the candidate seeks to fill (by way of citing the incumbent and the term of office).

All petitions must be picked up at the district office, One Poppy Place and must be filed with District Clerk Loretta Gronlie, One Poppy Place, no later than April 16 at 5 p.m. Further information may be obtained at the District's Administrative Office or by calling 327-9300.

In other action taken at the March 28 Special Meeting, David Fowler, Floral Park-Bellerose Board of Education president, was appointed to complete Cheng's term on the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board through June 30.
