The following are trustee reports from the Jan. 16 village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene reported that during 2006, the department responded to 1,239 alarms, 352 were fire emergencies and 887 were medical emergencies. The fire loss for 2006 estimated at $124,500, which is significantly lower that in prior years and may be attributed to better safety practices by residents and better response time by members. The members of the department received 6,533 hours of training, which was conducted on-site and off-site at the Nassau County Fire Academy.
Further, with the cold weather finally here, the chief's office would like to remind residents to exercise caution when using space heaters. Space heaters must be placed away from combustible materials. Only use extension cords for the heater being used.
Trustee Gerry Bambrick reported that in 2006 the department issued 805 permits, 244 certificate of occupancy letters and 327 certificates of completion or occupancy. The permit activity was lower than in 2005 by about 10 percent, he said, however, the estimated construction cost increased by about 10 percent. The estimated cost of construction covered under the building permits issued was $8,622,629. The building superintendent predicts that the current construction activity will be maintained in 2007.
In addition to the permits issued, the Architectural Review Board heard 99 new cases and the Zoning Board of Appeals heard 41 cases.
The department received 74 complaints regarding properties within Floral Park. Two hundred sixty-one notices of violation were sent out resulting in 39 summonses being issued.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that the mild weather this winter has allowed the Highway Department to do crack sealing of various village roads. During this process, fairly new roads that have developed cracks in their asphalt surface are filled with melted tar that hardens almost immediately. This process has proven to increase the longevity of roads and parking fields. Some of the road surfaces that have been done so far include Caroline Place, Creedmoor Spur parking field and Terrace Avenue.
Currently there is a bid out to purchase two new garbage trucks. These trucks will replace the two 1992 trucks, which have served the village for over 15 years.
Delivery is expected within the next few weeks of a new recycling truck to replace the 1990 truck, which has worn out after 17 years of service. This new recycling truck will be much more efficient and safer to operate Trustee Tweedy said.
Trustee Tweedy also said he received many comments from residents regarding the excellent maintenance of village roads. Trustee Tweedy thanked Superintendent of Public Works Ken Tymecki and his staff for their hard work.
Mayor Phil Guarnieri also complimented Superintendent Tymecki and his staff for keeping Floral Park's streets clean.
Mayor Guarnieri attended the recent retirement party for Police Officer John Donnelly, which was held at the New Hyde Park Inn and attended by his family and many friends. The mayor said John served the village with distinction for 37 years and that he and the entire village are very proud of him and wish him congratulations and Godspeed in all his future endeavors.
The mayor also noted that he and Trustee Jim Rhatigan were very pleased to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony in village hall Jan. 6 in honor of Nicholas Dunbar and Christopher Smith. Mayor Guarnieri said they are outstanding young men and that both Nicholas and Christopher did an exemplary job in fulfilling their requirements on the long road to Eagle Scout. "It is also wonderful to see the love and support provided to the boys by both the Dunbar and Smith families," he added.
The mayor said too that after personally visiting every home and apartment in Floral Park, he held the first community meeting Monday, Jan. 15, in the village courtroom. Residents from different parts of the village are being invited to small meetings in which they will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn about the village and discuss issues that are important to them. The first meeting was a very informative experience for everyone, Mayor Guarnieri said. He hopes the exchange of collective views between the village board and residents will provide for a more enlightened community. Mayor Guarnieri thanked Deputy Mayor Greene for putting together the "excellent" PowerPoint presentation.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Trustee Rhatigan and carried unanimously, Mayor Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 8:30 p.m.
