McCarthy: Eligible Seniors Must Reapply for Part D Low-Income Subsidy
The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Part D) will contain many changes in 2007. I share the concern of many pharmacists and advocates that low-income Medicare beneficiaries will again have trouble getting prescriptions drugs next month, as they did in January.
Approximately 600,000 low-income seniors will lose the guarantee of 'extra help' in 2007 that covered nearly all of the costs of prescription drugs this year. Seniors who are eligible for additional assistance will need to apply for the 'extra help' benefit through the federal government or state agencies such as EPIC. Seniors who are eligible for extra assistance but do not re-apply will face substantial price increases at their pharmacies in January.
Low-income seniors who are assigned a plan by the federal government should carefully examine their benefits. Even if you have been assigned to the same plan there is no guarantee all of your prescription drugs will be covered. It is important to check with your provider to ensure your assigned plan is right for you. All seniors may change plans before Dec. 31 without penalty.
In addition, many prescription drug plans are changing benefits and approved drug lists, as well as preferred pharmacies. All Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in a Part D plan should check with their provider to ensure they have the best coverage at the best price.
To compare plans, simply call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit www.medicare.gov. You may research plans on your own or work with a Medicare representative to make sure you are getting the best value and coverage for your money.
