The following are trustee reports from the July 11 village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene reported that the department responded to 80 medical and 31 fire calls for a total of 111 calls during June.
Deputy Mayor Greene reported that in an effort to educate residents, the village is presently developing a link on the Floral Park website (www.fpvillage.org) on how to prepare for unexpected emergencies such as hurricanes. This link is expected to be up and running possibly next week.
Deputy Mayor Greene also noted that the contractor is finishing up with the concrete work and placement of sod. The construction of the new road is ongoing and the work is expected to be completed by July 22.
Deputy Mayor Greene further noted that the on-site re-caulking of the coping stones is currently taking place at Centennial Hall, which should solve some of the problems with water coming into the building.
Trustee Gerry Bambrick reported that the village has been receiving numerous complaints regarding increased air traffic over Floral Park. Trustee Bambrick has been in touch with TRACON (air traffic controllers) and the Port Authority regarding the issue. Approximately a year ago, after intensive lobbying between the FAA and the village, in which Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy came to Floral Park's aid, a provision of the New York TRACON's standard operating procedure was rescinded. This provision of the standard operating procedure, which had been in place for over 25 years, had mandated that the "instruments only" (ILS) approach to Kennedy Airport Runway 22 Left be utilized from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. the following afternoon, bringing all of the air traffic directly over Floral Park. It is important to note, however, Trustee Bambrick said, that the recision of the standard operating procedure does not eliminate air traffic over Floral Park or eliminate the use of the ILS approach.
"It simply removes the requirement that the ILS approach be the exclusive approach during those hours when certain weather factors exist, such as winds from the south combined with poor visibility," Trustee Bambrick explained. "TRACON and the Kennedy Tower require aircraft to use the ILS approach for safety reasons. Even when weather appears to be clear, visibility may be poor on the south shore by Kennedy Airport.
"However, the recison of this standard operating procedure should allow for the more equitable distribution of air traffic when such weather conditions do exist," he added.
Trustee Bambrick encourages all residents to visit www.fpvillage.org for listed telephone numbers to contact state and local politicians and other complaint hotline numbers.
Trustee Tom Tweedy noted that the road overlay program is progressing and that King Street and Emerson Avenue have been milled and utility castings are being raised. Weather permitting, the contractor was scheduled to put the asphalt down July 13-14.
The village concrete contractor will start repairs to sidewalks and curbs marked for repair on Clover and Maple Avenues. The next street to be inspected for violations will be Elm Avenue. If anyone has questions about the sidewalk program, contact the Department of Public Works at 326-6320.
The Department of Public Works has started re-striping traffic lines in the West End of the village. This project will continue all summer throughout the village.
Graffiti vandals have defaced the retaining walls of the Long Island Rail Road. The police department is currently investigating this problem and when the vandals are found they will be prosecuted, Trustee Tweedy assured.
Trustee Tweedy also noted that work is progressing very well and in a timely manner on Magnolia Avenue and he thanked Deputy Mayor Greene and Village Engineer Ed Palmer for all their hard work.
Trustee James Rhatigan said the Floral Park Pool is in full swing. Swimming lessons are under way as well as family event evenings, senior citizens days and swim meets. The annual pool dance was slated for July 14; the Bob McVeigh swim-a-thon for July 15; and Grandparents and Residents Day July 16. Further, applications for pool membership are still
being accepted.
Trustee Rhatigan also reported that the Floral Park Public Library remains busy during the summer with a number of programs for children, teens and adults. The summer reading clubs have begun and an AARP Driver Safety Program will be held at the library Wednesday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This course is for drivers 50 and over. Registration is required and should be made in person at the library.
Mayor Phil Guarnieri said he had the honor of attending the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Kevin Augustine and Joseph Perge from Troop 482. Mayor Guarnieri commended the two young men for their dedication and hard work.
Mayor Guarnieri also noted that on July 8 he had the opportunity to welcome several new businesses to Floral Park. "It is important to have a strong business community, he said. "It shows the village had a sound heartbeat and strong pulse."
The mayor said he also had the opportunity to attend the Mass for Monsignor Nosser in honor of his retirement and recognition of his contributions to the community and Our Lady of Victory for the past 32 years. The ceremony expressed the deep and abiding affection parishioners and friends have for Monsignor Nosser. Mayor Guarnieri thanked him for his dedication and guidance.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Trustee Rhatigan and carried unanimously, Mayor Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 8:55 p.m.
