Letter to the Editor

I would like to commend The Dispatch for its fair and objective coverage of the recent Floral Park trustee election. Fortunately the residents of Floral Park have at least one place to turn where they can read about the candidates and campaign issues in unbiased stories printed side-by-side in the same issue.

I would also like to call attention to an unfair campaign tactic employed by our incumbent village government - the taxpayer subsidized mailing of the Village Items newsletter to all residents in the week prior to the election. The village will likely respond that this newsletter contains important information and it has always been mailed at this time of year. However, just because something has always been done in a particular way does not make it right, and none of the information contained in the newsletter is so important that it could not wait until the week after the election. This newsletter mailing at taxpayer expense amounts to free campaign literature for the incumbents and it is an abuse of power that should be stopped.
