McCarthy Secures $1.5 Million for Cold Spring Harbor Cancer Research

Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy announced the Women's Cancer Gene Initiative at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor received an earmark for $1.5 million in the fiscal year 2006 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill.

"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a tremendous asset to Long Island and the nation," McCarthy said. "The work being done in the areas of breast and ovarian cancer will benefit future generations of women from around the world. I am honored to work on behalf of this great institution."

The Women's Cancer Gene Initiative at the National Cancer Institute designated Cancer Center at Cold Spring Harbor will identify the major cancer genes in breast and ovarian cancers. Further experiments will validate genes that are good drug targets, and allow new line treatments for breast and ovarian cancer patients to be developed. These potential new therapies will be coupled to gene-based diagnosis of cancer in individual patients.
