The following are trustee reports from the Nov. 15 village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene said the department is currently under way with its fall cleanup. In early December, 108 trees will be planted throughout the village.
Deputy Mayor Greene also reported that the fire chief's office was once again successful in securing grants with the help of Senator Michael Balboni in the amount of $32,000. The money will be used to purchase automatic external defibrillators for a few village buildings and allow a few of the medical responders to attend paramedic school.
The fire department currently has 16 members enrolled in an emergency medical technician refresher course. This is a four-month program and members are devoting two nights a week for four months in order to maintain their EMT status.
Deputy Mayor Greene recognized the fire department drill team, the Doodle Bugs, for finishing third overall in the county this past year in the old-fashion category.
Further, the fire department will be conducting business fire inspections over the next several months. Inspections serve two purposes. The first and most important purpose is to help business owners identify unsafe conditions and provide guidance on how they can make their building safer for employees and patrons. Secondly, these inspections help department members familiarize themselves with the layout of the buildings, which can help in their immediate response should an emergency arise. The department responded to 110 alarms during October.
Trustee Gerry Bambrick reported that during October, the department issued 27 building permits, 19 plumbing permits, 24 electrical permits, 11 fence permits and 14 miscellaneous permits.
The Architectural and Preliminary Site Review heard four new cases Nov. 22 while the Zoning Board of Appeals will hear five cases Dec. 14. Next year's meeting schedules for the Architectural and Preliminary Site Review and the Zoning Board of Appeals are currently being reviewed.
The amount of permits processed this year indicates the Building Department is keeping pace with the previous year's workload. However, Trustee Bambrick said there have been a drop in applications for the Architectural and Preliminary Site Review during the last two months. This could be seasonal or it could represent a downward trend for permit applications, he added.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reminded residents that the field closed as of Monday, Dec. 5. The park closes each day at 4:30 p.m. The all-purpose courts will remain open for the Screaming Eagles roller hockey program.
Mayor Phil Guarnieri reported that he had the pleasure of attending the Floral Park Chamber of Commerce meeting held at the Village Pizzeria on Tulip Avenue where he gave his State of the Village address to the local business community.
He also noted that he had the privilege of attending the Veterans' Day ceremony, led by American Legion Post 334 and held at Memorial Park. The mayor noted how moving the ceremony was and wishes to thank all veterans for their poignant reminder that "freedom is not free."
On motion by Deputy Mayor Greene, seconded by Trustee Tweedy and carried unanimously, Mayor Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 9:05 p.m.
