Local residents headed to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 8, Election Day, to vote for the candidates of their choice in several races this year. Many of the races returned incumbents, with one exception.
Nassau County
County Executive
Voters re-elected County Executive Tom Suozzi to his second four-year term as Nassau's head honcho. Suozzi, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 178,133 votes while his challengers, Greg Peterson, who ran on the Republican and Independence Party lines, and Robert Bruno, who ran on the Conservative Party line, received 114,115 and 9,097 votes respectively.
District Attorney
In the race for Nassau County district attorney, prosecutor Kathleen Rice bested incumbent Denis Dillon. Rice, who ran on the Democratic, Independent and Working Families Party lines, received 151,819 votes while Dillon, who was first elected district attorney back in 1974 and was seeking his ninth term, received 143,827 votes.
County Comptroller
The race for Nassau County comptroller returned Howard Weitzman to the post for his second four-year term. Weitzman, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 151,819 votes while his challenger, current Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin Jr., who ran on the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party lines, received 134,111 votes.
County Clerk
Republican Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell proved to be the winner in the race for Nassau County Clerk, a position being vacated by Karen Murphy. O'Connell, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 149,275 votes while her challenger, Democrat Tricia Ferrell of Uniondale, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 132,669 votes. O'Connell was first elected assemblywoman of the 17th District back in 1998.
Town of Hempstead
Town Supervisor
Republican incumbent Kate Murray bested Democrat Harvey Levinson, current Nassau County assessor, in the race for Hempstead Town supervisor. Murray, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 96,146 votes while Levinson, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 65,485 votes. Murray first became supervisor back in January 2003.
Town Clerk
Republican incumbent Mark Bonilla, an attorney by profession, proved victorious in the race for Hempstead Town clerk. Bonilla, who ran on the Republican, Independence, Conservative and Working Families Party lines, received 85,305 votes while his challenger, Democrat Kevin Gorman, who ran on the Democratic Party line, received 67,308 votes. Gorman ran unsuccessfully against Bonilla two years ago.
Town of North Hempstead
Town Supervisor
Voters re-elected Democrat incumbent Jonathan Kaiman to his second term as North Hempstead supervisor. Kaiman, who ran on the Democratic, Independence and Working Families Party lines, received 29,087 votes while his challenger, Republican Patricia Harrington, who ran on the Republican and Conservative Party lines, received 16,444 votes.
Fifth Council District
Republican James McHugh of New Hyde Park proved to be victorious in the race for Fifth Council District, a seat being vacated by Tony D'Urso. McHugh, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 3,252 votes while his challenger, Democrat Lee Seeman of Great Neck, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 5,188 votes.
Town Clerk
Voters returned Democrat incumbent Michelle Schimel to her fourth term as North Hempstead clerk. Schimel, who ran on the Democratic, Independence and Working Families Party lines, received 29,083 votes while her challenger, Republican Louis Chisari of Garden City Park, who ran on the Republican and Conservative Party lines, received 15,762 votes.
Nassau County Legislature
Third Legislative District
Republican incumbent John Ciotti held on to his post in this year's election. Ciotti, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 6,503 votes while his challenger, Democrat Ali Mirza of Elmont, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, received 5,822 votes. Ciotti was first elected to the Nassau County Legislature back in 1995.
Eighth Legislative District
Republican incumbent Vincent Muscarella, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 13,351 votes while his challenger, Democrat Joan Hazleton of Franklin Square, a newcomer to the political arena, received 4,380 votes.
Ninth Legislative District
Voters returned Republican incumbent Richard Nicolello to his fourth term as Ninth District legislator. Nicolello, who ran on the Republican, Independence and Conservative Party lines, received 10,739 votes while his challenger, Democrat Milton Espinoza of Williston Park, also a newcomer to the political arena, received 5,171 votes.
