Assemblyman Tom Alfano and Adelphi University are teaming to remind women throughout the area that October is breast cancer awareness month. Many low-income women may not be aware that they can get a free or low-cost mammogram. The Adelphi New York State Breast Cancer Hotline and support program is urging women to call the hotline at 1-800-877-8077 to learn about resources available to them.

"This is a preventative health care measure that can help women beat back breast cancer," Assemblyman Alfano said. "Getting a mammogram on a regular basis is the key to addressing health care issues before its too late."

Hillary Rutter, director of the Adelphi-New York State hotline, added, "We want to make sure that every woman in New York is able to get a mammogram."

Rutter and Alfano urge women to call the hotline, toll free, at 1-800-877-8077, to find out about resources in their community and to discuss any other concerns about breast cancer.
