Catherine Hester, 91, died in her apartment in Ann Arbor, Michigan, July 20, 2005. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary and John Visconti, and her sister, Rose Griffing, she is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack Hester, her son and daughter-in-law, John and Jackie Hester, her daughter and son-in-law, Rosemarie Hester and Stephen Darwall, her grandchildren, Kristin, Andrew, Julian and Will, her brother-in-law, Whit Griffing, and nephew, William.
Ms. Hester was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1934. She was a devoted teacher whose career at Covert Avenue School in Elmont, NY flourished for over 25 years. During that time she enjoyed her students, their families and the warm collegiality of the faculty. Ms. Hester was chosen to teach in the pilot for Headstart in the 1960s and dedicated many summers to the program.
A music lover all her life, she moved to Ann Arbor in 1995 where she enjoyed her home and neighbors in Oakbrook Villas. There will be a visitation from 9 -10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Ann Arbor this July 30. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis.
