Due to the quick reactions of Floral Park Police Officer William Doherty, and with the assistance of fellow Floral Park Police Officer Kim Scanlon and Clerk to the Village Justice Don Phillips, alleged serial bank robber Parvez Bal was subdued and placed under arrest May 18 when he allegedly attempted to rob Citibank. Phillips was in the bank at the time of the incident, which resulted in the shooting of Bal when the 24-year-old Bellerose resident allegedly tried to run down police officers on scene and flee. Bal's injuries were not serious.

Bal was suspected of at least 13 other robberies in the area and was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and the attempted robbery of Citibank.
