In what Nassau police are dubbing an unusual incident, a human leg, with hip and spine attached, landed in the backyard of a Louis Avenue home in South Floral Park Tuesday, June 7. To homeowner Pamela Hearne's surprise, the leg, which fell from a plane preparing to land at John F. Kennedy Airport, crashed through her detached garage and bounced to the ground.
According to reports, a stowaway appeared to have been lodged in the wheel well compartment of Flight 203, South African Airlines, heading here from Johannesburg early Tuesday morning. When the plane landed at approximately 7 a.m., a customs agent discovered more remains, including the victim's other leg, still hanging out of the plane's wheel well.
Hearne discovered the leg at approximately 10:30 a.m. She quickly called police, who upon arrival discovered the portion of the unidentified human's body. Homicide detectives, along with investigators from the Port Authority of New York and the New Jersey Police Department, as of press time, only determined the leg was that of a black male.
The scene was sealed off and officials took the leg, which was reported wearing an Adidas sneaker and socks, away in a plastic bag. The remains were transported to the Queens County Medical Examiners' Office and the investigation is continuing.
