On Saturday, May 21, South Floral Park held its 15th annual Armed Forces Day Ceremony. Deputy Mayor Ingram chaired the event, which was attended by a number of elected officials, including South Floral Park Mayor Angel Soto, Legislator John Ciotti and Councilman Ed Ambrosino. A representative from County Executive Tom Suozzi's office was also on hand for the commemoration.

Michael Tetro, George Dee and Manny Rodriguez present the flags during South Floral Park's annual Armed Forces Day ceremony.

Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. According to the United States Department of Defense website, "the single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department - the Department of Defense." The day is designed to unify the different branches of the military and is intended to be a day of appreciation and remembrance.

Keynote speaker Edward G. Aulman, director of the Nassau County Veterans Services Agency, a veteran himself, spoke about the needs and successes of the veterans he works with on a daily basis. He discussed the country's patriotism and saluted the branches of the armed services for their continued sacrifice and support. He concluded his speech with a personal message for service men and women: "I salute you, I thank you and I thank God for you."

Happenings at the ceremony included a presentation of the flags by the Color Guard, comprised of members from American Legion Post 1033, Western L.I. Detachment Marine Corp League and the South Floral Park Fire Department. Theresa McCollin placed a memorial wreath in front of village hall and the Sewanhaka High School band provided the musical backdrop, playing patriotic selections like God Bless America and music from the movie The Patriot.

Deputy Mayor Ingram closed the ceremony with a reflection on the military's efforts. "Without those service men and women, you and I couldn't enjoy freedoms we do everyday," he said.

A reception followed the ceremony at the South Floral Park firehouse. The reception provided an opportunity for the community to visit with veterans and service personnel in attendance. It was also a time to thank them for all they have given in the interest of preserving this country's way of life.
