Thousands of New York State troopers, police officers, citizens and dignitaries, including Village Mayor Ann Corbett, County Executive Tom Suozzi and Governor George Pataki, bade farewell to 31-year-old village native Robert Ambrose just days before Christmas at a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Victory Church.

Thousands of New York State troopers and other police officers and local citizens stand in respect for Robert Ambrose outside Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Floral Park. The village native died in the line of duty at age 31.

Mr. Ambrose died in the line of duty on the New York State Thruway late last month. As he filled out paperwork for a two-car fender bender on Interstate 87's shoulder in Yonkers, a Jeep Cherokee veered off the road, causing a chain reaction crash. The impact caused two of the four vehicles involved, including Mr. Ambrose's Ford Crown Victoria police car and a tow truck that arrived on the scene, to go up in flames.

Mr. Ambrose lived in Floral Park until just recently when he moved to Rockland County to be closer to his job. Mayor Corbett, on behalf of the Floral Park community, extended heartfelt condolences to the Ambrose family. At Our Lady of Victory Church, Governor Pataki spoke highly of Mr. Ambrose. He leaves behind his brother Paul, his sister Christina and parents Wayne and Evelyn.
