Local voters returned incumbents to their seats in Congress, the Senate and the Assembly on Tuesday. (Editor's Note: Please note that the total number of votes indicated were the latest as of press time.)

Michael Balboni

Michael Balboni, the Republican incumbent for the 7th Senate District, was re-elected to his fourth term. Balboni, who also ran on the Independent and Conservative Party lines, received approximately 47,480 votes (62 percent), defeating Chris Murray, the Democratic, Liberal and Working Families candidate. Murray received approximately 28,751 votes (38 percent).

The 7th district includes the communities (or parts) of Westbury, Floral Park, Hicksville, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Stewart Manor, Manhasset, Port Washington and Great Neck.

Thomas Alfano

Incumbent Thomas Alfano was re-elected to his fourth term in the NYS Assembly. Alfano, who ran on the Republican, Independent, Conservative and Working Families Party lines, received approximately 22,239 votes or 69 percent. Democrat and Liberal Party candidate Joseph DeFelice received approximately 9,214 votes or 28 percent while Floral Park resident and Right to Life Party candidate Daniel Corry received 930 votes or three percent.

The 21st Assembly District includes, among other communities, Floral Park, West Hempstead, Franklin Square and Elmont.

4th Congressional District

Carolyn McCarthy

Carolyn McCarthy was re-elected to the 4th Congressional District. McCarthy, who ran on the Democratic, Independent, Liberal and Working Families Party lines, received approximately 92,232 votes (56 percent). Republican, Conservative and Right to Life Party candidate Marilyn O'Grady received approximately 70,215 votes (43 percent) while Green Party candidate Tim Derham received approximately 823 votes (one percent). The newly drawn district includes Mineola, Garden City, Floral Park, East Meadow, Malverne, among others. Tom Dwyer, who was appointed to the North Hempstead Town Board last January, was elected to complete the term then vacated by Councilwoman Doreen Banks. Dwyer, who ran on the Democratic, Liberal, Independent and Working Families Party lines, received approximately 29,751 votes (53 percent) over Tim O'Connell, the Republican, Conservative and Right to Life Party candidate, who received approximately 26,127 votes (47 percent). Dwyer will complete the remaining year left on Banks' term and will have to run in November 2003 to be elected to a full term.
