Sewanhaka High School is creating a new scholarship in memory of Eamon McEneaney, a member of the Class of 1973 who lost his life in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.
According to alumni who knew him, McEneaney was "simply the most outstanding lacrosse player and one of the finest individuals ever to graduate from Sewanhaka High School." He attended Cornell University on a lacrosse scholarship, graduated with numerous athletic and academic honors and entered the field of business and finance, eventually working in the World Trade Center.
Dr. George Goldstein, Sewanhaka's superintendent of schools, remembers McEneaney. "Throughout his life he was a model of personal accomplishment and human compassion. Through this scholarship, his accomplishments and his character will become a permanent part of our life in Sewanhaka," Goldstein said.
In the months following Sept. 11, his friends began preparing for what would become the Eamon McEneaney Scholarship Fund. It will receive donations that will eventually produce an annual scholarship to benefit a male or female student athlete from Sewanhaka High School who best exemplifies the qualities that Eamon possessed: integrity, honesty, compassion and sound character.
Memorial program founders have asked that anyone who would like to offer a contribution send a check, made out to "The Eamon McEneaney Memorial Scholarship Fund," to The Eamon McEneaney Memorial Scholarship Fund, Sewanhaka High School, 500 Tulip Avenue, Floral Park, NY 11001.
On Saturday, May 4, Sewanhaka High School will sponsor a major fund raising program known as "Eamon McEneaney Day," featuring a variety of lacrosse competitions and memorial ceremonies in his honor. The day opens with a Sewanhaka Youth Lacrosse League game, sponsored by the Elmont Police Activities League at 9 a.m. Then, at 10 a.m., teams from the police and fire departments will compete. A Sewanhaka High alumni lacrosse game, scheduled for 11:30 a.m., will follow. The final event will be a regularly scheduled league lacrosse competition between Sewanhaka and Elmont Memorial High Schools, beginning at 2 p.m.
Sewanhaka alumni who would like to compete in the game can find information and registration forms at www.schsd.com. Registration will be completed by April 13. In addition to the games, a wide range of ceremonies honoring McEneaney and raising contributions to the scholarship fund will be scheduled.
