At this writing I am preparing a village-wide mailing regarding the proposed recreation-pool building. It will provide background and up-to-date information about the status of the project. It will also let residents know about an informational meeting on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. at Village Hall.
The re-bid submissions for the building were opened on Aug. 8. Since the 8th, I have met with administrative personnel, the recreation superintendent, the clerk/treasurer and financial advisors. On Aug. 21, the village board met with representatives from the engineering firm responsible for the building specifications and architectural drawings. This is the same firm the village has been working with since 1996 when the original plans were developed for a community center at the site.
The village board is aware of the importance of the financial aspects of this proposal. We are working to finalize the cost of construction and to also forecast operating expenses. The engineering firm analyzed the bids and provided the board with more detailed information on Aug. 21.
More information will be in my mailing. The board will have the responsibility to weigh public sentiment, finances, the condition of the present pool building and the recreational needs of the community today and in the future. Based on these factors, the board will decide whether or not to proceed with the project by Oct. 1.
I had the pleasure of taking part in both the pool and recreation awards ceremonies held Aug. 13 and 16. It is always a happy occasion to be around young people when they are recognized for their participation and achievements in our many summer programs. Recreation Superintendent Kurt Meyfohrt, the staff and counselors can be proud of their success in making the 10-week season a fun-filled, wholesome experience for so many youngsters.
Hundreds of boys and girls participated in pool and recreational summer activities. Trophies and other awards were presented to swim team participants and for other pool activities. Tennis, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and football program attendees, winning team members and valuable players received patches, trophies and medals presented by Recreation Commissioner Gerry Bambrick, Trustees Kevin Greene and Tom Tweedy, myself and staff.
Congratulations to Denise Holtz and Marty Siry - each named "Camper of the Summer - 2001."
The village web site gets many visits or "hits" every day. With more residents on the Internet, they often want to read our web page and get up-to-date information about our various departments, village events and activities. Like many others, it was only recently that my husband and I became "connected."
Unfortunately, the village web site met with some difficulties. Much of the information at the site was old and incorrect. In the past month, we have worked diligently to improve the site content and not disappoint visitors.
The village cannot place advertisements on its site nor can any links from the site have ads. Municipal government regulations require review of all materials added to or linked to the site.
Many local, civic, service, fraternal, youth and sports organizations have space on the site. An events calendar is available for posting activities and events. Web site information can be submitted to Village Hall. Please
provide the name and telephone number of the contact person.
Traditionally, most local organizations start their meetings and programs in September and end them in May or June. During the year, flyers are produced introducing the public to activities sponsored by these groups. Just a reminder! Drop off at least three flyers by Friday afternoon at Village Hall for display in the KIOSK, on the village studio channel 70 rolling bulletin board and for posting on the web site. Also, it would be very helpful if local groups would mail to the village a list of their officers including names, addresses and telephone numbers. The village gets many inquiries from new residents and others, but sometimes we do not have a contact person's name. Please help us to keep our organization list up to date.
Every year it is necessary to update our Comprehensive Emergency Preparedness Plan. Fortunately, our Civic Preparedness Director Joe Quaderer updates the plan on a yearly basis. In the plan, the duties and responsibilities of the Mayor and the board of trustees, administration, various departments such as police, fire, public works, are explained and outlined. Hopefully, we will not need to use the emergency/disaster plan but it's good we have one on hand.
