In the two years since Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy began to advertise the opportunity for Nassau schools to apply for educational and Internet access grants, Floral Park has received approximately $15,288, the Congresswoman announced today. Under a program known as the E-Rate, schools and libraries are eligible for private grants meant to subsidize expensive but important initiatives such as computers for our schools and Internet access in the classroom.

"E-Rate contributes to our children's educational needs by funding Information Age necessities," McCarthy said. "I applaud the Floral Park schools and libraries that have taken advantage of this opportunity and I hope they continue to!"

With the implementation of the E-Rate program, Congress recognized that technology plays an increasingly important role in today's educational experience, yet it remains a harsh expense. Schools and libraries that apply for grants are eligible for communication discounts ranging from 20 percent to 90 percent. The grants are not federally funded, but funded by mandatory contributions from private communications providers. The schools and libraries are responsible for paying the difference between their discount and the actual cost of service. All those involved are allowing children the opportunity to utilize technology investments, they become better equipped for the future.

The following Floral Park schools or school districts, and libraries have participated in the E-Rate program:

* Floral Park-Bellerose Union District $11,520

* Our Lady of Victory School, $3,728

"This program is beneficial to schools and the children," McCarthy said. "Schools are able to offset the costs of modern communications by only paying the difference between the service charge and the discount. At the same time, children will be better prepared for higher education and joining the Long Island workforce."

McCarthy continues to encourage Nassau County schools to apply for Internet access discounts. School officials should call the district office at 489-7066 for an application.
