We want to thank the hundreds of residents of Floral Park for signing our nominating petitions to allow our names to appear on the ballot in the March 21 village election. While we visited dozens of homes ourselves, scores of volunteers assisted in collecting signatures. We appreciate their efforts especially because of the weather conditions in recent weeks.

We both take pride in saying that our village has never been in better shape or more ready to face the challenges of the future. Floral Park entered the 21st century with a budget surplus, an impressive bond rating, and tax rates among the lowest of all villages in Nassau County and the lowest crime rate in Nassau County.

Our strong financial position did not happen by accident. It is the result of our long-term fiscal strategy of cost cutting, government streamlining, and innovative approaches to administering village services.

As homeowners, we know that property taxes in Nassau County are high. It is important to recognize that school taxes account for the largest portion of the total bill and village government has no control over school taxes. Village taxes, however, represent just a small percentage of the total bill we each pay. Our residents get the benefits of a full service village that includes police and fire protection; a Public Works Department responsible for road maintenance, refuse, yard waste and snow removal; a Building Department concerned with residential and commercial property and a fully equipped recreational center as well as our own village library.

While we are proud of these accomplishments, we believe that the success of our village means more than just adding up dollars and cents. It can also be seen in the unique character of our suburban community. Many older residents remark that our village looks nicer today than when they moved here. We agree with them. Our careful attention to the maintenance of our public buildings and facilities, the revitalization of our commercial areas and our efforts in working with dedicated volunteers to beautify our open spaces with plants, flowers and trees have preserved and enhanced the special attributes of Floral Park.

We would be honored to be re-elected to continue our public service as trustees. We want to work to get the most out of each tax dollar and keep Floral Park a great place to live and raise a family, not only for ourselves but for generations to come.
