The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship was conducted at John Lewis Childs on Jan. 8. The students who were shooting that day were the winners from the four district schools where over 1,100 students entered the competition. The four schools were Floral Park Bellerose, Floral Park Memorial, John Lewis Childs and Our Lady of Victory.
The winner for the 10-year-old boys was Douglas Winters, Our Lady of Victory. The runners-up were Brendan Regan, Floral Park Bellerose School and Pat Halissey, John Lewis Childs. The winner for the 10-year-old girls was Maggie Murphy, Floral Park Bellerose School. The runners-up were Deidre Fronda, Our Lady of Victory and Antonia Patano, John Lewis Childs.
The winner for the 11-year-old boys was Joe Garcia, JLC. The runners-up were Eric Andruzzi, FPBS, Michael Scheiner, OLV and Chris Khedaru, FPM. The winner for the 11-year-old girls was Laura Hackimer, JLC. The runners-up were Tricia Quinn, OLV and Megan Salmon, FPBS. The winner for the 12-year-old boys was Joe Sylvestri, FPBS. The runners-up were Mike Sullivan, FPM, Anthony Diaz, OLV and Michael Watts, JLC. The winner for the 12-year-old girls was Katie Coughlin, FPM and the runner up was Christy Thottam, OLV. The winner for the 13-year-old boys was Joe Zullo, OLV and the runner up was Terril Amparado, FPM. The winner for the 13-year-old girls was Janet Sica, FPM and the runner up was Andrea Winters, OLV. The winner for the 14-year-old boys was Ryan Freely, FPM and the runner up was Sean Fuery, OLV. The winner for the 14-year-old girls was Jenna Favuzza, OLV and there were no runners-up.
The Grand Knight of the Floral Park Council, Thomas Moore, congratulated the winners and presented them with a certificate to commemorate their achievement. The free throw championship chairman, Thomas W. Smith, expressed the council's thanks to the athletic directors of the four schools that conducted the initial competition for over 1,100 students.
