On Friday, Dec. 31, the Millennium Mile will be held with midday activities celebrating the last day of the century. At 11:45 a.m., those interested in rollerblading down Tulip Avenue can join in the fun when the event starts at Key Food on Covert Avenue at the intersection of Tulip Avenue. Then at noon, you can walk or run in the historic mile that ends directly in front of the village hall. The police, fire, public works and recreation departments of the village will all be involved to make the day a safe and fun experience. Remember, best costume awards and special salute for oldest male and female participant.

Registrants can park at village hall and some volunteers will drive you over to Covert or you can just meet there at least five to 10 minutes before the horn signals your event. After both events are completed, participants will stroll around the corner to Jim Whalen's Beir's on Atlantic Avenue for some refreshment and awards ceremony.

You can register up until Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Shelter House at the Recreation Center or mail the application in to village hall with 'Millennium Mile' written in the corner. The fee is $12 per participant and you will receive a unique, colorful long-sleeve T-shirt that commemorates the day. The shirts are at the Shelter House now so if you want one, register and it is yours to take home. Those interested in just purchasing the shirt can do so as well at the same price.

Superintendent of Public Works Lou DiSunno has come to my aid and will build a time capsule for burial in the future home of Heritage Park. All residents, young and old, are invited to contribute any thoughts they may have at this momentous occasion for mankind - the new millennium. Those with old photos or items that would be of interest to those 50 years from now should bring them to village hall (or my house if more convenient) before Dec. 30, when all the contents will be placed in the time capsule and then hermetically sealed a few hours before the ceremony.

While we hope to fit everyone's contribution into the capsule, we would appreciate it if you could bring it to village hall as soon as you can. We can enlarge the capsule if necessary if we know the size beforehand.

The burial of the time capsule will take place at 1 p.m. across the street from village hall and all are invited. A marker will be added in the near future to protect the site and to announce that it should not be opened until 12/31/49, (2049 that is). Please take a moment to join in the fun.
